P/steer conversion on FJ40 *(it's time...)
Howdy,
I've decided to bite the bullet and convert my 40 to power steer. Now, how would I go about this exersize? I'd like to use easily accsesible parts,ie: Toyota, Commodore etc, as I live in the Riverland (SA) and anything I buy will have to be over the phone.
I saw a post on a conversion using Cressida parts, but cant find it now. So I will rely on the collective wisdom of those that have gone this way before.
I may even consider getting the whole thing done professionally,in one hit ,BUT who and what parts.

you will need the 60 series colum, because they have a bearing on the firewall. the box and a pump to suit your motor.
i have everything you need. the extended 60 series colum, the cressida box, the draglink. i might even have a pump to suit a 2F.
you will have to cut your firewall a little to fit the 60 series colum. as its a 4 bolt square flange not a 3 bolt circle. (its really easy)

Im here for the sausage!

I hear that a cut down 55 series column can be helpful too mate.
and mounting the box from a 60 may require moving shock towers etc.
mate go up the top here to SEARCH
then type in key words like 40 series power steering., or cresida.
and select TOYOTA as the forum.
good luck, and if it works post pics up.

I'll have a look tomorrow.I dont want to move the shock tower, unless I have to.It sounds like an ugly move. But the Cressida box sounds good.At first glance.I'd like to do the conversion without moving too much stuff,if you know what I mean. I guess reinforcing the chassis is an obvious move, but as to the rest ,is there an easier way?
buy a late model 40 series power steering box.
i did the 60 series box on my 45. shock tower isnt that bad, its only moving it to the other side of the shock.
i was going to make custom shock towers at the same time as the power steering conversion, but then decided to go coils up front. so i used completely different towers anyway.
most 4wd shops will quote around 1000-1500 drive in drive out.

No, you're not dreaming, LOL. Hilux PS box swap into 40s is common in the States. There are even outfits that sell adapter plates for this swap:
of course this kit is for LHD vehicles, but you get the idea.
The problem a lot of people have with Hilux boxes swap is the lack of power with large tires, such as 35". I wheeled a mate's with 32" tires and you can still feel the power steering struggling to keep up at times
Cheers,
Dave

have heard that i should use a FJ55 colum.
does anyone know exactly what bits i need to use?
55 column is the best way to go if you can find one...took me a while to find one from a wrecker as they are becoming scarce...I used nissan pulsar steering uni joints which are the same spline as the column and 60 series box to make the intermediate shaft....also it is important to plate the chassis and use crush tubes in between the chassis rails for the steering box mounting bolts...my advice is to do the conversion as the improvement is so much better than the stock setup..no more wandering all over the road....
bad_religion_au wrote:will hilux power steering go in where the original steering box is, with a slightly modified bracket? then the rest of the steering is basically untouched? or did i dream that was true
you could, but then you still have that crappy relay box that has lots of play. and the relay rod, that when compressed suspension travel and turning a bit rubs on the tyre.
I think I may have got a bit excited by the prospect of a p/st. conversion.I dont have easy access to wreckers *(250 k away).I dont have the spare time to do it.As far as i can tell , theirs no-one in SA able to do it for me.*( I spoke to one P/Steer expert in Adelaide, about using parts other than 40 series p/s parts. He said " Yes, I've heard rumours of that happenning.) Maybe I'll buy a boat instead.Or maybe a fridge. At the 4wd show..Managed to wrangle half a day off!!
So thanks for all the help, anyway

my ingredients for 60 steering
FJ55 Column
Uni Joint
Short shaft from Bundy
60 Box
75 relay
just add arms
pump i already got
The uni joint - the 55 column and shaft have large splines and are real hard to find - hilux has one big end one small end
I got 2 off hiluxes (don't let my cruiser down) split them and rejoined with large spline both ends - this might help anyone else with same problem trying
cheers scott

column in my BJ connects to a coupling then into steering box
the 40 column goes straight into 40 box
60 box sits in front of the shock tower so is a good foot or so further forward
you need an extra shaft to reach the 60 box
with 60 box further away and different geometry you need to use a uni joint to allow for angle in column
55 column is easy cause the spline is in the open once it goes through firewall
i also reckon this'd help offset bodylift changes to angles ? now the column(s) are able to tilt more ??
i also have fj60 column it has a uni joint on the end where it bolts to firewall i reckon could use that too but will go with 55
maybe i am not entirely right but thats my 2c
