Can I have a bit of both.
For play The GQ has the better body cos it is slightly smaller.
GU for the front axle, cos it is much stronger eg CV's.
GU for better steering wheel, GQ ones are crap.

SO can I have a bit of both.

They both have strong and weak points. I will go the GQ. Lighter, Better gear box pre 1994, and costs a lot less. And I own one. And apparently snake racing garentee that they have GQ cv's that wont break.

says the bloke driving a series II rover

i have had a series II and a GQ and now a GU.

in standard form the GU's are stronger.

from a driving position they are better as well. there is more room around your legs so you arn't banging your knees all over the place thats the biggest thing. theres a heap of little things that just make it more refined.

Construction of GU body and extra chassis reinf points is MILES ahead of GQ.

GQ cracks and flexes all over the place. GU built like the old 60 series, torsional stiff.

For a competition vehecle I will stick with the GQ. The only place that I have had to strengthen is around the steering box. The GU's still have to strengthen the spring towers like the GQ's. If I bend my chasis there are lots around for the GQ's. Parts are everywhere for GQ's.

GQ's are lighter.

Even if I had the money to buy a GU for competitions I would not buy one.
For touring I would buy a GU simply for the refined luxuries and space.

P.S if nissan offered me a brand new GU to race I would not turn them down.

Cheers

gu has stronger diffs steering and chassis.
GQ has a narrower body.
GQ has a shorter front chassis as there is crush cans on the GU chassis
GQ 4.2 has more room around engine to mount extra compressor as the vaccuum pump is mounted on the alternator.
GU has vacuum pump mounted under power steering pump so its easier to upgrade the alternator.
GU ute chassis has extra reinforcing over the GU wagon chassis which has extra reinforcing over the GQ chassis.
GQ is narrower than GU so its easier to fit through narrow tracks.
GU has better turning circle than GQ.

buggered if i can decide

for a comp truck just put the GQ ute body on the GU chassis.

I was told that it would cost $30,000 for the first SWB GU to become legal in Oz, and that is the cost to crash test one (does not include the cost of the GU!) - so I assume some of the other grey imports had to do that.

Not a problem if they dont get used for anything other than comps.

Funny thing is I have seen a couple of Prado SWB's (late model, not Bunderas) in Brisbane...

GUs are just money down the drain. HA! So are GQs, just a bit less. But at least they aren't toyota.
If we can put one man on the moon, why can't we put them all there!!
