I'm just after some opinions on 2H turbo, or V8.
I've got a 83 troopy ( eventually will become a ute), 2H, and thinking of either turbo, or sell 2H and whack in V8. My old cruiser ute (which was for sale on OL a while back - modified since i had it) was a 283 V8 chev, which went ok, but i never spent the money to get it going good.
Has anyone had both, or at least driven both?
Info on things like reliability, on road grunt, off road grunt, repair costs.

Turbo would get you on the road again the fastest.. 1 day.
Working out that a turbo will set you back $3500+ exhaust... and then depending on the condition of your motor, it may need rebuild to handle it more 1000s..
If you went a V8 now, you could put that $1000's towards it + what ever change you get for the 2H...
Other things to consider
Whats the gearbox/clutch like? would it work with V8 ? Would you need a new clutch to handle power?
Radiator would it work with a V8? or need to do a Tonka0 and panic and spend $3904823948 on a new trippy setup?
Are you doing the work, or paying someone else, turbo you can do yourself in a day.. engine swap depending how many hours you put in and hassles could take weeks/mths...

I have 2 60 series cruisers... 1 with a 2H the other, I bought and it already had a V8 Chev dropped into it.
I investigated it pretty well before I bought my toy(V8 Chev) about getting the 2H converted to a chev. It's not a cheap exercise. All up it was going to cost about 10-12k fitted for the chev convo.
Although, if you are going to rebuild the 2H and then have a turbo fitted... I'd prob be able to justify the extra few thousand. Nuthin like have'n the grunt there when you need it.
Fuel economy is a bit rough, but I don't exactly drive like granny does so that could be a factor. But get about 1100km from about 160-165ltrs, haven't really tested it on the highway yet.
In the bush, it's great... what more can I say. You can put it in low 1st and just let it idle up steep hills with ease!!!!

The grunt from a V8 is good, but the fuel ecconomy is bad and with fuel priced set to rise again for what ever reason the Govt has this week, I would make the ecconomy issue a MAJOR part of the equasion....
Installation of an LPG system for the V8 conversion would be very wise so dont forget to add that into the costings, it may also help with engineering issues.
As for the cost, as Bogged said .......... how much are you going to do or are you paying others to do it 4 ya ??

I love driving my V8 rigs , but the fuel issue means i drive the diesel 9 times out of 10. Our current fuel price is 1.09 for diesel & 1.07 for ULP, &
0.47 for LPG ........ if it rises as we are currently being told , I'd add 10 cents a litre to the diesel & ulp price..... ( our local servo is a ripoff )

Yeah, the V8 had the punch when you needed it out bush, and could rev higher, get more momentum in low 1st, while still having good crawl-ability.
V8 great in mud too.
Common sense seems to tell me to stick with good ole diesel, but inner devil Stackson45 wants V8 ROAR!!.
My old chev had a rebuilt 40 radiator, and vn thermo fan, only heated up on h/way, and serious hillclimbs with lots of flat knacker to get to the top.
I'm sort of leaning towards a 253, just because they're everywhere.

Well if you do decide V8, id say chev, but may others would prob disagree... only cause I have one and love it... apart from fuel consumption that is.
also the fact the rig is already set up for diesel too, save changing wiring and anything else that needs doing.

I run a 350 chev in one unit and a 253 holden in the other, apart from the obvious power output differance and relitave fuel use there really isnt a great deal of differance between the two on the road.
The 350 has a much better torque output ( obviously ) and is a strong towing rig over the 253 unit. I have run a 308 but it self destructed but I would also add it into you list of "possibilities", especially the EFI V8 from the VS series holdens ........
As for the ford motor ............. dont ask me .... I hate phuckin phords !

If you go the V8 option, you won't get much change out of $10k. I'm running a commo engine with EFI and gas so if you go carbie and no gas it could save you a couple of grand.
Just looking at the invoice, Misc crap (fuel pumps, radiator work, thermo fans etc) added up to $1400. $310 on hoses. best part of $1k on exhaust Labour was only $700!!!!
In short, its not cheap and there are ALWAYS teething probs. (on the other hand, a petrol V8 is soooooo much more fun than a turbo diesel.

When i did my ute, it cost $1500 engine ( parts at cost - free machine work) $850 exhaust, $1450 gas system ( 5 years ago) plus extras prob under 6K. But this time, i'll prob buy an unrego'd V8 cruiser, so conversion kit done, and little things like that.
V8 much more fun to drive...
