CV Joints

Post by zuker1500 »

Hi all

Have many of you had trouble with breaking CV joints on wide track diffs??

I seem to have the habit of breaking the drivers side CV quite often. Could be due to the fact that i have a turbo gti engine

Any ideas will be great.

You are a prime candidate for the Spidertrax birfield ring, check out the review below, ask mike from Townsville (I think is avatar is Tonka) how he found his. Spridertrax quote approx 70% stronger than standard:

PM me if you are interested in getting more info and pricing.

Look at lower gearing also.

How are you breaking them e.g.

Full lock in reverse crossed up

or

Full noise with a tyre in the air landing whilst spinning.

I am currently running 31's with lock rite front and rear and Rockhopper Series 1 Gearing.

I was going to go Vitara ring and pinion but have found that they are too weak.

Last couple of cv breakages were spinning and coming down on the spinning whels and also crossed up hard and on the gas.

So it wasn't diff???
just CV? hooly dooly!

I reckon you need to take that turbo off, swap in a 1.3, preferably with over 200k's on it, and take a coupla kgs of lead outa your right welly.

Problem solved!

Lower gearing is only gonna make it more likely to snap

ie more force (torque) at the joint.

But Danny, you know you want S3 anyway!!!!

P.S. Fot those that haven't seen it, Danny's motor is a work of art, Custom manifolds, custom programed chip and generally lots of special attention. I forget what the Dyno figures are (Danny?), but the thing produces stupid amounts of power and would make any ricer proud!

I think what Bigsteve is gettin at is that he won't have to launch it and bounce around with a S3 ;) There's more force but he can crawl everything instead of landing hard and getting snap traction

good idea, but the problem is the events are timed so dan cannot afford to crawl...

Mike, yeah i know i want an S3 but big dollars and have to get ministers approval. Am holding out for the day i win gold lottoo.

At the moment on 7psi boost it dials in around 90kw at the wheels so yes it has a little bit of power.

Last fault was yes a blown cv but also side gear in the front diff but the cv was only in for about 20m of off road driving and it destroyed itself. But i must admid 8000rpm at full noise and coming down hard on the right hand side really didnt help it.

I have installed new side gear and cv for the moment but i am going to have to invest in a set of birfield rings and new cv's. That will be the last ditch effeort. If this doesnt work it will be hilux diffs and spoa for sure!!

Mud4b, Generally the ASCC Short Course events are not timed so vehicle control is the key to winning. Mike has got this sorted well with his rig with the S3 and a great navi and some awesome driving control. I tend to lean on the gas pedal a bit :D :D :D Breaks heaps but the crowd love the blow off valve. And yes i am the king of all RICERS!!

Yeah good question!!

That was an extreme case but i broke one at the last short course also and then hadnt broken one for ages.

Problem with getting second hand cv, you dont know what punishment they have had before.

New cv's and birfields and i will see how it goes.
