converting diesel to petrol???
a guy came up to the hj45 the other day, started rabbitin on about how they always crack heads (really who approaches a stranger and says this anyway?), though he tried to tell me it was a 2H, but i know it's a H.
anyway, point is, he said the best way to stop this happening was to convert the 2H to petrol, not drop in a petrol engine, make the diesel eng, block, and heads, run on leaded petrol
how would one do this, how feasable is it, or is this guy a little . not that i want to do it or anything, the whole idea was a little odd though

you'll need a distributor and lower compression alot sorry about spelling thats 2 things first off unless you can make the glow plugs ignite the petrol duno if the injectors system would work with petrol so it might need converting to efi
it would probally be easier to just put a petrol engine in but then again some one might have a simple way of doing it

thnks, i really don't want to do this conversion ,was more wondering what it would take, as the bloke said it was the only way he found to stop the 2h blowing heads.... i would have just dropped in a V8 and been done with it... but i haven't cracked a head on the H, only a head gasket

I've never heard of 2H's cracking heads for a start. Did you ask the guy if he ran coolant in his before he cracked the head? He sounds like a twit. I couldn't see the economy in trying to convert an old pushrod 2h block into a petrol engine, let alone actually doing it.

I had heard it was possible to convert a 2 1/4 diesel Landrover engine to petrol this way, blocks are very similar.
CDon't know about Toyota but TB42 & TD42 blocks are also very close in design.

This is a fallacy too, the only bits the same between the Landrover 2.25 petrol and diesel are the block, the timing gears and chain, the front cover, the oil pump, and the sump (but late model diesel sumps were different too). Every other part is different. The crank looks the same but the petrol crank is cast, the diesel crank is forged.

Would the petrol really care if the crank is stronger? Involved a head swap and injector pump as well IIRC. Obviously the petrol would not be strong enough for a diesel conversion, even though the parts bolted on.

Sorry I was thinking of it the other way around - I know plenty of people who have swapped 2.25petrols for 2.25 diesels but don't know anyone who has gone back the other way.
Yes you could use a diesel crank in a petrol, but they use different main and big end bearings as well, so you may have to change them. The diesel starter and heavier diesel flywheel would be OK on a petrol (you would get a bit more torque but even slower acceleration), You would have to change the cam, and the head, manifolds, and all fuel and ancillary components. So yes it would be easier to convert a 2.25D to a 2.25P than go back the other way.
