Hi Guys,
need some help, I broke my rear drive shaft today, I know why and can sort this problem. However while limping home I discovered another problem which may have been around a while and gone unnoticed. When the vehicle is under load, often in 3rd gear going up a tared hill I loose power to the wheels (front), my engine revs pick up and then there's a loud clunk when the power reengages. I'm thinking it could be the splines on the manual hubs slipping, or a gear on the transfer sliping on the key way, maybe CV joint...not sure if they can slip like this. Anyone had this or got a place for me to start looking?? Its hard because it only happens when the vehicle is loaded and feels smooth to turn the drive shaft by hand.

Rosey, I would be pretty confident you have a knackered hub lock. I got new wheel bearings in the front of my GQ and when I got it back tested it to mkae sure it was done properly and I had exactly the same problem, but my hub lock was very, very tight to turn also (the one making the loud thud noise), so I sent it back and they hadn't set it up properly, fix it straight away. I don't know anything abouy how they work other than there is some springs in there somewhere apparently and these do wear out over time, so maybe yours are just worn out. Thats my experience anyway.

i'll dismantle the hubs tonight hopefully and look for the problem. I would be thrilled if thats all it is, last thing i want to start doing is dropping out tranfer and gearbox.
I am suprised I must say, I wouldn't have thought a spline could cause such a hard loud clunk without rounding itself out immediatly. Looking through the manual last night I really can't see where else the problem could be comming from though.
