Tyre help
Tyre help
Got a 1991 stock WT 1.3L sierra about 6 weeks ago now.
In the process of deciding what tyres to get and thinking I'll prolly get some 235's.
Most of my driving will be sand and the occassional mud hole in winter possibly.
I have stock size tyres now so my question is, am I going to have trouble turning the 235s and getting the momemtum needed when driving in sand and up hills. Mate said he had trouble turning them in his 1.6L Vit.
If so, will dropping a 1.0L transfer case in help at all?

Hey
Welcome newbie Also from Perth. Waho more westies.
best idea is prob to get the 235's and run them. If they seem power sucking, drop a 1ltr case in ( I am looking for one at the moment) and should all be good.
cheers

Are you offering to lead a trip?
[quote="OldGold"]Keep us posted how you go, I (plan to) do pretty much the same driving you mention, will be interested to see how the bigger tyres go in the sand... or if the mighty 1.3 can turn them
Yeh will do
Reason I ask all this is because the car ran out of puff 3/4 of the way up a lot of the sandy hills while I was out last week, partly because of the crappy worn stock tyres on it at the moment I think.
perhaps a 225 with an aggressive tread wood be better suited

I have 225 x 75 x 15 Cooper ST's on my 86 NT. I done a few trips with them to Fraser and found them great on the sand. Getting the momentum is easy, keeping it is a different storey. I have the standard 1.3 Transfer Case, and have only recall once that the gearing was a problem, and that was on a really really long, really steep track. Also, the bigger tyres help with those highway trips at 100 km/ph to the places you want to go, so think about the tradoff before you fit the 1lt case. My turning circle on the NT is pretty crap, and the tyres rub a lot on the chassis. Not sure if the WT has got more room or not.

225 is an unusual size and so there's not many brands available in that size and those that are available are more expensive per tyre than common sizes. Ask a feroza owner
Zooks tear it up in the sand because of the weight. Get some 30 x 9.5 at or mt on there, air em down to 16 and take the top off the zook

Depending on what tyres you are running Ryan, not all tyres will be happy at 8PSI. We were only on the beach a short time the other weekend and you ran one off the bead. Having said that, yeah 8PSI is good if ya tyres will hold the bead.

How'd this go for ya?malza wrote:I'm gunna go the 235s and invest in a reliable compressor.
Got a fibre glass hardtop on it as well, so not too hard to take off to lighten it up a bit when I go wheelin.
I'm in Newy and like to go to the stockton dunes a bit; need new tyres anyway, and trying to decide whether to go up in size. Currently I have a bone-stock 89 model, and am thinking that little red may have a point about the 100km/h trips - I'm finding that i shift into 5th by 70km/h and wish I had an extra gear.little red wrote:I have 225 x 75 x 15 Cooper ST's on my 86 NT. A couple more questions too,
1.) Im curious as to what the largest tyres to fit on a stock sierra would be without lifting and/or cutting
2.) What brand tyres are good for road/sand driving, but also capable of doing some trails etc later if i wanted to? - I'm thinking an A/T tread would be best, maybe BFG A/T's??
3.) How do tyre sizes compare e.g. 30" to 235? are they similar? (depends on width, From what I've gathered??)
4.) Would I be able to keep the standard rims when upgrading to larger tyres??
Thanks for any help Guys
Nick
Hey there, I have 235s on my Zook and have driven up and down the beach for 20 odd years. Go for 235s if you are doing beach work let them down to 10 Psi and you will be right. I have no issues with my 235s for the sand and am only short of power when towing a loaded trailer up tracks. Make sure you have a good cooling system and do yourself a favour and get some port matched extractors and exhaust to match. Nothing will touch you on the beach.
Is that with no lift or trimming of the guards. Also, do you need bigger (wider) rims than stock? 235's are approx = to 28inch? (according to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html ) is that about right? Do 30's fit on a stock sierra?
30s will fit bit will scrub real bad. you may end up wrecking your tyresnickw86au wrote:Is that with no lift or trimming of the guards. 235's?
Hey malza,
You said your mate's vitara had trouble turning 235's. The 1.6 must be a bit tired, because ive got a 1.6, stock gearing and 235 BFG AT's and have no worries. (BFG's have been awsome by the way)

Hi all. I think I'm in the same boat as malza. I just picked up a '91 W/T soft top the other weekend - had to work the big sales pitch on the missus for a month before-hand, so she'd let me buy it!!! She's a real beauty, straight as straight, never been offroad in its life.
Its currently got 205/70R15 road tyres on it, but we just fitted a 2" spring set last night. I'm after an agressive all-terrain, or a mud terrain tyre - but i dont want to touch ANY of the panel work. I'm going to make up some extended shackles (50mm over standard), but i dont know whether to get some F100 rims with some fatter, maybe 30 inch tyres, or to keep the stock rims and put some 215/75 (27.5x8.5) or 235/75 (29x9.25) rubber on them. (BF A/T and M/T's in those 2 sizes).
I'd preffer a half stock look, as i dont want to upset "the boss" - i said i wouldn't do ANYTHING to it.
Cheers - Coxy
