Recommendations for first 4x4

I am looking at buying my first 4x4 and would like opinions on what would be a good start. Will be trying to keep costs down spending around $6000. Would prefer it to be as comfortable as possible(e.g. air con,power steer) as will be used on road regularly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For 6k about the only thing that you could get with air-con/psteer etc etc would be a ZOOK!

You should be able to get a half decent one for that price.

Any Hilux's, nissans for that price will not have air-con and would be pretty rough!

40 series baby... if that floats your boat.

there are alot of things that a 40 is and alot of things a 40 isn't. and that's the reason some love them and some hate them.

i'm hazarding a guess you could pick a 40 up with power steering and air con for 6 grand, but you'll be buying...

a truck that's at least 20 years old

lovely short wheelbase leafsprung plushness (sarcasm)

crap economy, iffy power (going on my 2f powered 40)

what you will get though, if this floats your boat... a fairly tough (i know gq's are tougher) no nonsense 4x4. fairly good dependability and reliability. usually easy to fix yourself if your into that.

plenty of aftermarket support.

ability to go topless.

it's a personal choice on all that stuff.

I paid $3000 for 2 MQ Patrols and they both had A/C, so there goes that theory. As for my suggestion, i just made it Chase around and you will find an MQ/K with P/S and A/C well under $6000

But in your other post, you have said

Would it be worth looking at Vitara's and Feroza's if you want something smaller you will pick up an early 90's model of both of these with all the fruits in your price range. With a few small modifications, both will get you something thats fairly capable to suit a lot of peoples needs.

What are your needs size wise, as this will limit your choices aswell.

i must admitt i found my 88 GQ for 7500 have p/s and a/c
but i also got a few bugs with it nothing major now

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the advice. Really appreciate you helping out a newcomer. I don't really have any "must haves" for the 4by, I'm open to any ideas. I'd much rather get opinions from people who know what they're talking about than "I heard this" or "my mate says that".

A Rangie or shop around and find a swb gq for that price, both are great offroad have coils and all the creature comforts and very capable in stock form

stretch your budget and buy my bundera for 8k...p/s, a/c, p/windows... all the creature comforts you can ask for plus a very capable little cruiser.

i got a 91 NG pajero for $6500 with RWC in melbourne !

this is the V6 (engine only done 95k) but full electrics ... suspension seats, bullbar, full solid side steps and backsteps with check plates, sunroof (that works fine) and body in excellent condition.

Very happy and have started the mods !!!

mate, hold on and look around, especially in sydney...... i'm actually from brisbane and i picked up a 1990 model swb xlt (power steer, air con, sunroof, power windows, etc etc) maverick for 5300, i drove it straight home the following day 12 hours straight of driving. So there really wasn't much wrong with it..... i have spent about 1500 bringing it to really good condition including rego and stuff in brisbane..... planning on starting to mod it soon...oh and the only work its really done is towing as shes really clean and dent free underneath and through the body......

Point is look around be prepared to wait (i waited probably 3 years for a gq, right money right condition ) I've still got the old mq which i was driving before the gq...... if i were u get the sydey papers and look in there.... they seem to sell older cars a few grand cheaper then here in brisbane thats for sure.....

1990 Bundera petrol
Minor rust ,couple of small dents but overall good condition. $4450 was that a reasonable price to pay. Didn't really want a petrol but I remember my fortune teller saying something about an engine transplant a few months ago. Anyway thanks again I'm sure it won't be the last time I consult your help. Now on with the modifications.

Looks like no-one read this since they are still chucking out recommendations......I'm not a yota man myself - but the bundy is a good rig so hope yer happy with it!!!
