Just read about the davis performance upgrades in the latet 4wd monthly magazine. These figures have to be some of the best value for money upgrades availble on any sort of vehicle.

I find these figures astounding considering its only a 2.5ltr engine. I am seriously considering a td5 defender or disco. What are other peoples thoughts on this upgrade.

According to the article the 178kw and 520NM upgrade is just a new computer(revised fuel maps) and a new high flow intercooler setup. I don't believe boost is altered much.

Just the computer upgrade is worth 130kw and 450nm.

That upgrade is $2700 and a ECU upgrade and an intercooler. You can actually get a 200kw and a 250kw version of the same apparently. With just an ECU upgrade you can have up to 147kw.

The 200kw upgrade is very streetable, the 250kw is comp spec, sooty and uses a tank of fuel/100km. The non-intercooled 147kw can be sooty also though 130kw is streetable.

The catch is that the big chips are Defender and the auto will only take the non-intercooled options otherwise the over torque sensors trip and send the tranny into limp mode.

The ECU upgrade only is about $850 :shock: Value plus! :twisted:

TuffRangie I hope you're right, maybe they have developed an override for the auto since I last spoke to them. The 130kw was the norm for the autos as the larger 147kw would trip it into limp mode with slip/grip, though I do know somebody who was running the 147kw upgrade with a TD5 auto - he got pinged by the enviro police. I'll have to buy the mag

Stuee, not sure on the 250kw torque figures, the 200kw spec has about 550Nm though. I'm not sure if the extra kw come from a flatter torque curve or extra torque.

it seems capacity isnt much of a problem these days, OPEL offer a car in europe wth a 1.9ltr turbo diesel 159kw!

Well, the TD5 does seem pretty tweekable. There are loads of guys who do it now over here ranging from a box that plugs into the back of the ECU and optimises the output to your full on rechip and BIG intercooler. Theres also a guy overhere who's Nitroused his aswell (giving close to 300bhp :twisted: ) and I think he's just done a supercharger conversion :lol: . The TD5 personally isn't my favourate engine, but it does seem to tune pretty well!

The article is in the Australian 4WD Monthly, Issue No. 73, which is the current one and has Best 4wd of 2004 on the front.

Also says that DX Patrol wins best 4wd of 2004 over the Rangie-what a crock after reading it.

I like the sound of this, but how long can it pump so much before something dies. As thats alot of KW and Nms for a little motor. But it does make me think that a disco would make a good family car (now just need to get a family).

anyone seen a 2 stroke diesel engine .. they are made with a supercharger of turbos and generate a heap more horse power then either petrol or diesel.. could be something to look out for

well i was 85% sure that michael would know and he didnt let me down.. lol... so what are the draw backs with them .. i have not see a lot of negative info on them ..... they seem to be used in industrial and locomotive mainly and somewhere i read that a couple of SUV's in the states had them

I was about to say that - the Australian Army APC's date from the early 60's and have a V6 2-stroke diesel fitted to them. From memory I think they are naturally aspirated.

I always thought that to get a 2 stroke diesel to work it needed to be force fed.
We had a truck at my other work that is Turbo'd/Supercharged and intercooled. It went real well for a 22T truck. But best thing was that it was 4x4 with front and rear lockers, and big tyres.

They are a great engine GM super charged or both turbo and super charged.

way to big for most 4x4 usage.
small ones were 4-53 = 4 cyl, 53 cubic inch per cyl. heavy as

mainly used in trucks, boats, trains, that sort of thing.

got a an old grader at work with a 3 cylinder supercharged 2 stroke detroit motor. It just wont die. moves pretty well. Just needs some brakes :shock: :shock: :shock:

the worlds largest engine is a two stroke turbo & supercharged diesel, stationary. it was about 3-4 stories tall and was rated as beening 48-50% efficient. it was in italy somewhere. i can't remember what it was used for. i saw it on "coltrain's plains, trains and automobiles" and as for weird. my mate has an old book of engines and it quotes some diesel's used in aircraft!

Detroit mad a v8 2 stroke diesel and other variants. These are reasonablly common around the traps in trucks. Listen at night near a main truck arterial road and you can here them quite clearly over all else. My old man used to drive one and they sound and drive great.

I spoke to Bruce last week. This is now possible in the autos. The chip can now be told to overcome the the overtorque sensors in the auto. :D

200-250 kW / 520 Nm ? I am not sure, but it seems to me that Defender drivetrain is not ready for that. 380Nm is gearbox limit, for axample.
