Not being from Vic my experience is very limited, so I'm hoping some guys here can offer me some ideas.
I'm wanting to go somewhere with the misses for a couple of nights. I'd like to be able to go off road abit and get in some fishing. Would love to be able to drive on the beach.
Only places I've been are Mt. Dissappointment, and Lakes Enterance.
Thanks
Dan
P.S. I don't have a snatch or winch, so it'll be light to reasonable off road.

There are some nice drives around Mansfield where you can get in a spot of fishing. The Howqua valley and Sheepyard flat, or Jamieson-Kevington-Woods Point-Upper Yarra
There's a nice drive from Walhalla - Matlock - Upper Yarra with a good campsite down on the Aberfeldy river.
Over dargo way, you can go some distance up the crooked river before the tracks get serious. Some farmers up there will be happy for you to camp on the river flats up around the Kingswell Bridge. There's a lot of cleared land up here, so there are plenty of trout if the conditions are right.
There are some nice campsites along the Wellington river upstream of Licola. A nice place to spend a couple of days relaxing.
From Omeo to Talangatta along the Mitta Mitta river and Snowy Creek is a magic drive. I don't know what the fishing is like though. Good campsites around Anglers Rest.
All of these are 2-wheel access. IMHO, they are best driven late spring - early summer while there's still plenty of water in the rivers and before the flies are too bad and the camp sites all trashed.
If you're new to Vic, Wilsons prom, the great ocean road and the grampians are all worth thinking about visiting... not so much for fishing or 4 wheeling... but that usually keeps the missus happy.
Are you planning camping out? Where are you driving from?

Might have to go to a book store at lunch today and try to find a couple of 4wd get away type books, cause I got no idea about any of those places. I have only lived in Melb for 5 years and haven't seen much of it.
I didn't want to drive much more than 4 hours each way.
Can anyone recommend any particualar books?

murcod wrote:What about Lake Eucumbene (spelling?) nice area for fishing and camping- not sure about 4WDing. Did a day trip there when I lived in Melbourne many years ago and it was very nice.
Scrap that- I should have written "Eildon" instead of "Eucumbene"!

The Grampians are near where I grew up. There are a couple of lakes/ dams up there for fishing- Lake Fyans and Rocklands Reservoir are two I can remember. For Rocklands you really need a boat, not sure about Lake Fyans if the fishing is any good?
There's a lake near Horsham that was supposed to be OK for fishing too- can't remember the name? And a camping/ picnic spot by the side of the road between Hamilton and Horsham- Jimmy's Creek (IIRC) that was good for catching Redfin. Redfin is the most common fish in the area (plus carp and tench which may have taken over by now )
The Halls Gap area is very nice for camping and there should be tracks for 4WDing around that area.

4 hours each way eh.... Luckily that is most of Victoria.
camping without facilities;
Wellington River (north-east of Traralgon) (3-4 hours)
Howqua/Jamieson/Eildon (Mansfield/Mt Buller) (2-3 hours)
Crooked River Road (west of Dargo) (4 hours)
Walhalla-Matlock Road (north of Moe) (3-4 hours)
camping with facilities;
Grampians (3-4 hours)
Wilson's Prom (mostly sealed roads) (2-3 hours)
Great Ocean Road (Apollo Bay/Cape Otway) (2-3 hours)
Mallacoota (FAR east) (6.5 hours)
Just suggestions, enjoy your weekend. I wish I were going away! :(

A guy at work said Eildon would be crap cause it's soo dry... Might have to drop into a fishing shop and ask what's biting and where..
Thanks for the list of idea's DeVooluff.. we camped at Howqua once a couple years ago... We might head out that way but the looks of things.. Lakes Enterance is just too far away..

Fishing shop is a good idea to narrow down where you're heading. The Bureau of meteorolgy publish river data at;
flood data: http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/vic/
height data: http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDV60154.html
Of course... that's all useless without local knowledge, so the fishing shop is probably your best bet (and a good excuse to buy some more gear)
Cheers

Well I had given Lake Eildon the flick, and after buying some stuff on the Region, we.. *coughs* well I decided up Echuca way would be the go.. So again after buy more maps, the misses decided to agree with my previous suggestion of the Lake Eildon area.. Alexandria to be more precise. A bird here at work said that a few mates caught 8 trout up that way on the weekend near the catchment area.. Which is good enough for me I guess. heheeh plus it's closer to home
Anyone got any suggestions for that Area? I've never been there.
