after peoples opinions...
i have a 3b 3.4l toyota diesel in my hilux(yes pics coming soon)and have been given a garrett gt17 turbo. this is a fairly small turbo, built for 2.3l 4 cylinder saab(my housemate is a saab mechanic and he liberarted one for me).
the way i figure it it sould be ok.
2.3l saab at 7000rpm
3.4l diesel at 4000 rpm
the air volume should be around the same.
do you agree with my theory
revs x displacement = air volume

turbo sizes on diesel??

Sounds like it should be OK. It will spool up faster than a bigger turbo so will be good to get power lower in the rev range when offroad, but will probably not be as good on the highway as a slightly bigger turbo.
A mate of mine runs the turbo from a WRX on a 3.9L ISUZU diesel that revs to 3400. It works fine, but the turbo he tried earlier from a 1.8L subaru was too small.

is this a fairly current saab 2.3? I think they make about 110kW - it'll be right so long as you don't want to go crazy with the boost. Is it wastegated? if not you will have trouble with exhaust restriction. There is the possibility of overspeeding the turbo but the only real consequence is limiting your boost.
build it, if it goes good, cool, if it doesn't, the mods to swap in a slightly bigger garrett won't be that extensive, the only extra cost will be another turbo that will cost you about $400 from an importer.
