Diff Nut
Diff Nut
Ok, i have a leak coming from the yoke at the front of my back diff, so i thought i would take off the tailshaft, and remove the nut with a 27mm ratchet, and breaker bar if need be. But when i tried that all i got was my diff twisting and a hole lot of sweat and swearing,
anyone have any ideas on how to get this nut off, maybe a rattle air gun?
Share you experiences as i need to get this nut off, or if you have any other ideas on how to fix the leak, how much for seal etc..much thanks

Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
there is no specific nut torque as such , its tight when you preload the pinion bearings to a starting torque of 4.0-7.5ft lb and 7.8-14.7lb-in once turning.
you won't need to reset your preload as you haven't changed the bearings or crush spacer , just do it up tight it should end up where you first removed it ( ding in nut lining up with the cap in shaft ) and re stake it .
when removing nut make sure you punch out the staked part of the nut first and have the vehicle in 5th gear high with wheel chocks , don't have it in 1st you will just turn it with no luck , dont use a cheap ratchet you'll bust your knuckles (when the ratchet gear strips )
a rattle gun works if you have a decent compressor to drive it , usally ive found the small ones (25lt tank jobs) lose air pressure too quick to be very effective.
to install the new seal just get a piece of the right diameter pipe to go over the pinion ( making sure the edges are clean no sharp lips) and bang her on in .
cheers jai
