Vl 3lt turbo transplant.

Post by ludacris »

I am just wondering if there is any way I can keep my 4.2lt gearbox and bolt up a 3lt turbo charge motor to it.

PM Aus4WD, they did an RB30-DET into a SWB patrol.

We have a RB30 Turbo motor & gearbox in our SWB Mav, it produces approx 175kw at the wheels with an intercooler. This conversion will cost about $5K. We get up to 8.5klms per litre on the highway, approx 6.5kpl around town and approx 4kpl offroad. It's alot more economical than the TB42 ever was and produces a s**tload more power.

The only problem we have it that it is tuned for premuim, but we just make sure we have octane boost on board in case.

The bloke fitting the VH45 is me and we have adapted it to fit the standard 4.2l gearbox, not such a cheap conversion, it will set you back approx $10K.
Cheers,
Dan.

Yeah Aus4WD did have a GQ shorty with a RB30ET in it. Used the gearbox from a RB30 Patrol, although I think you can also use a RD28 box. These are a completely different unit to the TB42 gearbox and the bellhousing is not removable so you are limited in options. THe RB30 box is basically the same as a VL box but with a transfer case. Interestingly the transfer case is the same on both boxes.

Be warned though....... You'll NEED at least 4.6's, preferably 4.8's if you plan on running 35's......

Cris

FYI

Pics of the 2.8's gerabox (same as the turbo rb30s) compared with a 4.2

Why not just rebuild your 4.2 petrol and turbo it?? like drafty did.

Wouldnt be hard takin it to a zaust shop and fabricating a custom turbo manifold and stick a nice hairdryer on it and go from there??

Since the extractors for the TD42 and TB42 are the same. Instead of getting the manifold made. Just buy one off Safari. As they make a TD42 kit. Then guy turbo's and stuff from else where.

I know of someone who just brought the exhaust manifold. But I dont know where they got it from. I know they have mates in 4b shops, so there may have been a bit of wheeling and dealing going on.
