80 Series transfer Q

Post by 80diesel4play »

Guys,

just noticed that recently (last 3 trips) the follwoing has begun to occur.

under load in low range going down a hill, trail braking with the engine... the damn thing pops out of Low range!!! only does it down hill, while you would be doing say 2000 rpm in second low..... and trailing teh throttle...

Any suggestions toyota techo fans? Its a part time case (pov pack 80) that get good oil loving and slight hints of respect when I'm feeling good...

Not sure where to begin and I don't wanna pull it apart just yet!

Cheers!

how many km on it (and how many in low range), what engine (turbo etc?) and what tyres are you running, does the transfer make any appreciable noise in low or high range (trying to get a feel for potential wear in the transfer)

it is possible that wear on the low range clutch and/or shaft bearings in the transfer are causing sufficient misalignment in overdrive (engine braking) situations to disengage the clutch. if this is the situation then a transfer overhaul is the only real solution, replacing the clutch hubs and rings.

does it have a body lift?

it is possible that under certain conditions, with a body lift and if the crossmember is bent or if the engine mounts are stretched or broken, that the shifter is hitting the body and popping it out of gear.

any more info on it that might be helpful?

just clicked 300K, no turbo, has 3" coils and Body lift - checked it out with body lift - plenty of room but will strip and look again...

I've owned the thing since it hit 200K, with a good guess of 15,000 of last 100,000 in low range...(i Use it !!!) Currently on 37's with standard gearing!! Ran 35's for ages with no issue. Only been since the 37's wet on was there any issue!! Hmmm - I know some of the mounts must be due soon!!! I'll check those buggers too!!

Shanks - any other ideas?

with that kinda km and that much low range use I'd suspect the transfer case internals :(

someone on here is always wrecking an 80, a transfer swap shouldn't cost a bomb. they are pretty easy to change out but a pain in the bum to overhaul.

good luck bud

Hi
My last cruiser used to pop out of low when climbing steep hills ....and its amazing how fast you get to the bottom again...anchors thrown out...front wheels locked all the way down.
I dont know what caused it, but i would think the bearings in the high/low shaft were worn enough to kick it a little sideways...enough to move the selector fork and rod out of the detent that holds it...
