Just reading up on the QLD transport website about rim and tyre sizes as I want to run 30's or 31's legally. I've been looking through the Queensland Transport vehicle modifications pdf file.
Basically it says that on a 4wd with front and rear beam axles (??) the tyre size can be up to 1.5 times wider. So that would make it legal to run up to 9.75 wide tyres (standard is 6.5 afaik?)
However the only concern I have in the 'Low Profile Tyres' section it says "The rim diameter may be varied from standard size but the overall diameter must not vary by more than +15mm or -26mm"
I'm confused by the title of that section, as we arn't changing the tyres to low profile.
So can anyone explain whats legal? Would a 30/9.5R15 or 31/10.5R15 on an 7 or 8" wide rim be legal? I want the car to be legal mainly because of insurance and also because I'm usually driving over 200km on-road per day. If those tyres won't pass I guess I'll just have to get an engineers cert..
I've already got a 2" bodylift and 2" OME lift so fitting shouldn't be an issue.

ok, i live in darwin, and i have no idea of what different states require, and i heard that for up here that the over all measurements of the tyres can't be more than 1" in height and width from standard (not sure though), but,
for the part about changing the profile of the tyres, and wheels, its pretty much keeping the same overall diameter to what the factory wheels and tyres are.
so if a factory wheel and tyre measure 28" over all diameter, whatever you change to, needs to be 28". this is more so on sports cars (ricers) where they 'upgrade' to bigger wheels, like 17" or 18", and lower profile tyres (rubber bands).
like on my X-Trail, it came with, i think 215/75R15 (27.9"), and i put 235/50R18 (27.4") on. the over all diameter is pretty close, and not much off with the speedo either. i think thats the main reason, speedo correction, (and maybe gearing too?).

I had a bit of trouble with my former insurance company about tyres.
They said the maximum legal width for tyres on my sierra was 195 wide, so that meant i had to change them from the stadard 205 to 195, and fork out lots of dollars. So i said bugger that, bought 30's and went with JUST CARS. And im pretty sure in tassie you can run big tyres legally aswell.

Your best bet to find out is to ring them and find out from the horses mouth. Get them to send you a written copy as there is always a lot "My mate said" with these sort of issues.
Also may pay to confirm with your insurance company as they aren't always on the same playing field as what is legal by the authourities

What a bunch of f-wits. Sierras come STOCK from the FACTORY with 205/75R15s.

My mate does RWC in brissy, and has been thru this with his zook.
The law states that you can alter the width by 1.5 times, but you cannot alter the track of the vehicle. So the offset on the rims cannot change from standard. ( which means you will have alot of fouling on the springs, and wheel arches when you turn.....illegal)
The other thing is, as stated above, that you can only increase the diameter by +15 or -26. So you are really stuck with a zook. If you go taller, its illegal. If you go wider and not alter the track, you will be illegal anyway, cos the tyres will foul body and suspension.
So just fit whatever you want, and F$#%em all!
