Drewfus Zook build-up story (at a snails pace).....
Drewfus Zook build-up story (at a snails pace).....
In memory of GREG....
First up, let it be known, I have a life (and responsibilities), and so I make no appology for the slow progress of my buildup as the zook is not on the top of my list of 'things to do'.....although I do wish it was further advanced than it is.
Long story cut short......Previously owned a LJ80 softtop, which was partially swaped for the current project zook. I lost out badly on the deal due to a bad dose of desire before reality. In hindsite, I should have stayed with the 80.
This is what I ended up with...... a engineless, rusted out '82 litre shell and chassis (note: I added the 31" tyres on 8"rims, 2" body lift).
After doing a bit of research, I acquired a early corolla which donated it's 4k engine and 4 speed. I then proceeded to do a bit of 'booty fab' and fitted it in.
Then I got married.....
The zook sat still for a while as I had other things on my mind, and the more I looked at it the more I hated it, it was requiring a lot more work, with no real benifit at the end of time invested.
So, I decided to treat it as a 'life lesson', take it on the chin, and start again from scratch.
I ended up buying 2 more zooks of varying types and condition with the intention of making 1 'good' unit from them all.
insert lesson 2...........1.0 & 1.3's are not the same, and not all 1.3's are the same either
insert lesson 3.........sometimes better & cheaper to buy 1 complete finished vehicle like 'big steves' then try and build one from 'cheap' bits.
Moving right along......I now have basically a '85, 1.3 softtop, with wide tracks, vitara 5.11's (?) & 31" simex(although I still owe Germo finance for these......ie anyone interested in buying my 'regular' street 31's?) awaiting finance for rego.
Esentually stock otherwise.
Since I won't be registering it for a while, I figuired that I'd do a few 'simple' mods, with the intention of adding some more adventurous mods later in time as the opportunity's present themselves...
I've had a burst of enthusiasm of late, so I removed the bodylift, currently cutting gaurds and sills and will be making roll cage (internal) in preperation for the destined carnage ( as previously mentioned, carefactor of car still at 0%)
Here's the chariot as it stands....
The car will continue to be painted 'fiat orange' after I've finished the tinwork mods.
I'm in no real rush, just playing every now and then as the opportunity's present themselves.
Future plans are....
* RUF (or possibly a coil spring conversion......haven't decided just yet).
* 3/4 rear with longer springs
* currently using a litre transfer, hope to replace with S3.
* Bigger engine.
* SS fueltank (moved from current position to allow for rear diff to be mooved back
As mentioned, I'm going to cut the sills, although haven't decided wether to just chamfer them with a piece of 3mm plate, or cut out the edge section and weld in a piece of RHS or pipe.........what do you reckon?
Also, as mentioned, Ive got some 31" tyres(5 off) and rims(4 off, 15x8") for sale if anyone is intersted as I'm going to buy Germo's simex's, will be posting them in the for sale section a bit later for those that might be interested....

Looking good mate,
i cut my sills on a 45 degree angle, can email you some pics if you like.
I used the angle to try and deflect the rock or whatever the vehicle may hit as opposed to a regular slider rail resting ontop of the obsticle.
(i think that makes sense, slide off it rather than rest on it)
Any way you did a good job on those front guards.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
it looks like you cut too much off the guard. or are you moving the firewall back?
P.S someone buy his tyres so I can put it towards paint, engineering and rego.

time for a small update.....
1. Front clip/gaurds havenow been trimmed and replated to allow for bigger tyres etc, will take some photo's this weekend (hopefully) to illustrate.....
2. preparing to cut / chamfer sills, just need to fire up the welder, again, hopefully this will happen on Sunday....
3. WARNING.......excessive amounts of BLING ....if ya don't like it, go straight to point 4
due to general lack of care or love, my tailgage was dinted & generally needing repair. Since I'm re-doing barwork/lights painting etc, decided that it was time for some 'bLiNg', an since I'm generally cheap and 'slap happy' I took the 'cut, plate & sikaflex' option.
Firstly, take said tailgate and remove the basic outer skin, leaving only the bare 'frame'.....giving it a coat of 'flat black'
(this saves having to use make mounts for hinges and latch...)
And then, remembering that 'checkerplate' covers 'stupid mistakes', fold up a bit of plate, cut some holes for brake lights (NARVA 12 volt sealed rear stop/tail light, P/No 94010, approx $25 each, complies with ADR 13/00, & ADR 49/00).
Using 'large amounts' of 'sikaflex' glue the c/plate over the top of the old frame, and then fit to car......note: door latch is the 'bare basic' internal ones from the early litre s/tops...)
Will be fitting it to car on the weekend......stay tuned.
4. have just got my 'DAWN' pipe bending dies....tube arives tomorrow, keen to start on rollcage and new barwork......
5. for those of you who might not have noticed...I've still got those 31" tyres and rims for sale......anyone? .......bueller?

roll cage/brushrail/ladderrack nearly finished (tube all bent and tacked in place), will be welded this weekend hopefully......pictures Monday.....
Also need to finish front and rear barwork.....
Have recieved some widetracks with 5.12(?) vitara gears, need to reassemble the rear assembly, and find another ????? (the bit the crown wheel bolts to) as the one I've got has cracked due to being welded incorrectly.
Snails pace, but still moving forward.
Cheers,
Drewfus

Due to working 70 hour weeks, and the zook being at parents place as I stiff havent built my shed at my place yet, progress is still slow.
Will be cutting sills and rear gaurds soon (current clearance over top of tyre to gaurd =70mm, much more needed.).
Cage steel/tube is bent and ready for welding, was hoping to do yesterday, but just ran out of time.
I did trial fit some 35's so I can see how much more I need to 'trim'.
Note: these are intended only for the street, will go back to 31" simex pedes for crawling torque in the bush......until I can afford some 34's.
Also, reconsidering putting my bodylift back in to minimise the cutting.....will have to see as time progresses.....
So do these tyres make my bumb look fat?
