dillema help and poll
ok.. ive just rebuilt the 4.2 diesel, whacked on a turbo, and shes finally going,, everythings fixed. (still doin the rear brake lights and that'll only take 5 mins)
Here lies the problem.
its only done a pffft 10/20 kms since rebuilding and they have been test kms none on highway yet to test for overheating etc
Now my instinct tells me NOT to go to outerlimits wild weekend and run in the engine properly.. 1000 kms and change oil.
Another instinct tells me to go for a long drive tmw and day after to test temperature and drain oil when done and then shoudl be completed ready to go.
Opinions everyone??

fill the tank up and drive around the coast all night!!!!! if it farks up, you dont go, if it doesn't and goes like a dream cause you built it properly, GO!!!!!!!GQ wrote:ok.. ive just rebuilt the 4.2 diesel, whacked on a turbo, and shes finally going,, everythings fixed. have you rebored/new pistons/rings?
if you want to extend the run-in a bit, you can do it on the highway, just keep the speed down to 100ish (all you can do most of the way anyway) and keep flicking it up and down between 4th and 5th, speeding up and slowing down a bit - avoid keeping the rpm constant for any length of time. If you've built it right, it won't be a problem.
go the weekend!

Personally, i dont beleive it to be a smart desicion to go up there and drive it offroad hard straight away.....
I lost a 308 doing that as i drove it too hard. I believe it needs abit of a run it first.
Though.....
Going to the OL weekend and back will get some KM's up and be a good run it trip so u will get a chance to run it in at least...
Id go, but only for the purpose of getting k's up and then dont drive it offroad.
cheers

yes and no... it would be cool as to drive it there but not cool to break it there or on the way there... if you can take it for a drive before and it seems fine definitely drive it there but take it easy...i wouldnt do too much tuff stuff in it..i spent just on 3 grand and one week with no sleep to have my car at a show and got it there at the last minute and blew it up after six minutes of actual driving...mind you it could have been the 8000rpm and 250 shot of nitrous that did it too.....

I drove mine reasonably hard for the first 500km's after my rebuild to bed rings in. changed oil @50km's to get rid of any crap left in oilways etc, then again @500km's-Re-torqued cyl head bolts @1000km's. I had no problems in my first 1000km's other than an oil leak from a welsh plug behind the flywheel. If your happy that everything went together ok, then go along and take plenty of tools....BUT its a long way if you have any dramas that need a worshop to fix....

there is no comparison between a crufty holden V8 and a jap diesel. and offroad driving should be far less stressful on the engine than highway driving - always in low gears and no reason for the revs to get up.

Ive decided on that advice.
Ive completely wiped out my bank account and have no dosh for OLWW2,
BUT i got my main priority done.. and that was to have the patrol done by OLWW2, even thou i am not able to go now.. I wish everyone the best time over there and look forward to seeing the pics.
Big shame
But the best decision i believe on my situation.
ENJOY THE WEEKEND FELLAS!!!!!!
