GQ SWB Vibration solved??
GQ SWB Vibration solved??
Hi Guys,
Not sure if you read my other post about the probs I was having after getting my SWB lifted, developed the vibration which comes on about 30 kmh then dissapears after 50kmh. Just been told that it is probably due to the tyres. They tried to get them balanced and the guys said they are pretty badly out of shape. This could explain the vibration. Maybe I didnt notice it before because the suspension was so soft and saggy that it absorbed it, or that they have been put back on in a different order??? It does feel like a tyre problem when driving it, although
I always thought that tyre vibrations appear at a certain speed, and will continue getting worse as speed increases..seems weird that it dissapears after 50 kmh. Can anyone suggest this is true or false??
I guess the best thing I can do is to grab some wheels and tyres from another car and take it for a drive.... will see what happens..
Thanks to all the advice I was given on this problem...cheers

So you still haven't established if it is driveline related yet...
If it were driveline related there would be a grinding "whir-whir" kind of noise accompanying the vibrations - You would be able to tell.
Read this article it will explain in depth the driveline dilema - if any, then go and lie underneath your car and look closely at your rear driveshaft outputs..
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/driveline/
Do you get any shimmy in the steering wheel during the vibration.. ??
Or is it just the cab vibrating... ??? Badly balanced wheels would prolly give ya a case o the death wobbles + vibrating...
New wheels... When I bought my shorty it had a 50mm lift and 31" kumho muddies that where badly worn (ie; f#cked). I would get the death wobbles at about 80 - 90 kmh and then they would disappear. I put on new 33" muddies and the wobble/vibration dissapeared. I then did about a 5" coil lift that cause a whole heap of other dramas buttt.... shorties rock soo..
Is there a hardcore 4x4 joint anywhere near you in WA ????
But if you mention the words "lifted" and "short wheel base" in the same sentence it makes me think driveline related.
Shorties are fiddly and can vibrate even with a mild lift. But if it only occurs at those speeds mentioned then yeah it could be a balance issue...

cheers for the info. Am gonna do some tyre swapping to find out for sure. I really hope it is the tyres.....then I can get the 33's
when you say a hardcore 4x4 joint, do you mean a shop, or some tracks??
mmm
Nah I mean like a WA equivalent of say Binskins 4wd or Snakeracing. Someone who has or has had a lifted GQ shorty and knows what they are looking for/talking about....

yep, theres a shop around the corner from me that pretty much specialise in GQ SWB's....unfortunately I purchased their oppositions suspension..
Bugger...
Meh I got my kit off Big Balls Offroad... Shite sort of kit too the Tough DOg gear... stay away from it..
I have been taking my car to binskins for little shite and getting them to help me with little drama's etc... As long as they think they'll get some business from ya they should be happy....

Ok, quick update.
Took it to a friends workshop the other day, disconnected the rear drive shaft, took it for a drive in FWD, still seemed to have the vibration between 30 and 50, but definately not as obvious
Had it running on a hoist, at the 30-50 speed, the front right and rear left wheel were making a fair bit of noise, and the rear left seemed to be shaking as it was spinning.
They have suggested that I do the front wheel bearings, as they need doing anyway. Can anyone suggest anything else that could cause this problem :
Vibration and noise through car between 30-50 kmh.
NO Shaking of steering wheel.
Problem also happens when dropping to that speed, ie If i get it above 50 then let it drop back down, it seems to have the vibration through that speed whilst slowing down (in neutral too), but not as evident as when accelerating, it seems to be easier to create when under load.
Other people have suggested that it does not seem like a tailshaft vibration, Uni Joints have been checked and suggested to be OK.
Any ideas from people on what I could do to narrow it down more??
Thanks

i see someone has mentioned changing the tyres how did that go? this happened to me
other than that it can only be due to the lift but you drove with the rear tail shaft out and wasn't so obvious so still saying this are you getting to much angle on your front tail shaft just try some gear box spaces try two of them if it goes away then you know for sure its the drive line and you could use other measures instead of spaces after this
Or is your tail shaft out of balance
Or what about your rims are they ok
my head hurts

Gearbox spacers don't just lower the gearbox, they angle it downward at the rear. So they would help the rear driveshaft angle but I am not sure they help with the front much; even though it drops lower, the universal joint at the gearbox would have to be at a slightly worse angle.
I think.

Thanks for all the info guys. Havnt tried anything except the gearbox spacers yet, just trying to grab as much info as I can.
Was driving around last night, seing if the problem is definately there when not accelerating. I do still get the vibrations when just idling through that speed, but nowhere near as much as when under load. Could it be that the wheels vibrate more when they are being accelerated?? Or does this prove that its not a wheel or bearing problem, and I should be looking elsewhere.
The front bearings are getting done on Thursday, they are gonna throw on a different set of rims and tyres too to count that out. In terms of gearbox spacers, would it be harmfull to throw in another set with only a 2 inch lift? The ones that are in there are about 8mm?

Try getting your tailshafts balanced (on the car). Cost is about $100 each.
My SWB has 5" Lift running 36 'pedes and 3 degrees offset caster bushes, no vibrations at all standard control arms rear and standard panhards, (still waiting for the adjustables to arrive).

36/12.5/15 Simex ET2's
few other bits to add yet.

Ok, had the front bearings done yesterday, and driving around on a set of road wheels on split rims and vibration still occurs, however doesnt seem to be as bad now.
When I was there last week we removed the tailshaft and the problem still occured, however was very minor (i may try this again on the weekend to confirm). Now, if the problem does occur with the tailshaft removed, what does that cross off the list of possible causes, is it just the shaft itself, or would this also prove that the rear diff is fine???
