What GQ year model is best?
What GQ year model is best?
My brother is looking at buying a GQ and he is wanting to know which year and gearbox/motor combination is the best out of the GQ series and what sort of problems should he look for?
Thanks Boxhead.
Thanks Boxhead.
also as pathetic as this sounds the 88/89 have a different steering stabiliser setup which is harder to obtain on the aftermarket. wizard panhard and drag will fix it though

Later is better
The pistons may be better in earlier models but the upgrades to gearboxes, powersteer box, chassis around panhard rod etc make later units better. There are fixes available eg bolt on support for panhard rod
Definantly check for body cracks. Some of the common places are:Body mounts at the bottom of the channel section, inner guard on right hand side next to battery, where inner guard meets firewall, seat base mounts, bottom corners of the windscreen, where floorpan meets sill panel in drivers/passengers side footwells, bottom of radiator support panel. The amount of cracking, if any at all in these places, depends on how much hard work the trucks done. Mechanicals are reliable and long lasting if maintained. TD42 looked after will easily go to 600,000km's before possibly needing work. Look for axle housing cracks on early models...
