Hi, I have a 1998 SWB GQ (the last of the shape made here in NZ) it has only 91,000kms on it and I am having difficulty with getting it into first gear once stopped, it goes in but takes a lot more effort than my last few Toyota's? Sometimes you really have to nudge it hard. Are the GQ 5 speeds notoriously notchy or should it be smooth as a Hilux/Prado?Landcruiser I have previously owned?

gearbox oil capacity is 4.8 litres
transfer case capacity is 2.2 litres.
Its quite dead easy.
Right under centre of gearbox is the drainage plug which is undone with a 1/2 inch ratchet (square)
the filler is on the drivers side with a simliar plug to the drainage plug.
The drainage plug has a magnet on it so check it or shavings or metal to give you some idea of the gearbox's condition.
To fill it up. you'll need a pump of some kind..
I recommend a 500ml hand pump which is filled first and then pumped thru a tube- also good for diff oils as well

I just replaced my gearbox oil in the gq the other day with some castrol epx 80/90 that was according to the manual right.
I even added some nulon stuff but it is just so much more notchy now!
I wish I new what oil was in it before cause it was sweet and smooth as.
Any recommendations from people as to what is the best oil for the gearbox??? Castrol 80/90 (in my case anyway) is no good at all.

ive found in my '88 shorty double clutching or "rev matchin" the best way, give the throtle a quick squirt and as the rev's drop it slides into gear quite easy...
i'm sure there's many reasons not to do it this way (mostly to do with clutches <--- feel free to abuse me on this stuff) but from cruising around in my old datsun 1600 at mid to high rev's its the only way it would smoothly change down coming into a corner

yep
nothin wrong with dbl clutching and as for rev maching how do you think racing drivers get such quick gear changes, i do it all the time, practicd in the work cars cos if you miss it isnt good for the the gear box

When I did my last one 6 months ago I pulled a 90mm diameter mangled syncro retaining circlip out through the drain hole, that's got to be a plus in reliability stakes, though it does crunch going into 5th sometimes without it, I may have trouble bending it back to the right shape to poke back in the filling hole

Well the verdict is out - It's heaps better!
I changed the box oil and it's noticably smoother, still a little hard to push into 1st on the very odd occassion, but did 1000kms in the weekend and all seems good, still think I add some Nulon and give it a go. Thanks for all your replys.

Synchronizers should not have to slippery oil.

I recently replaced the oil in my gearbox. (1992 EFI LWB 5 speed GQ)
Mainly, as going from 1st to 2nd it was quite notchy. And going into 1st from neutral at a stand still was also notchy.
It was more noticeable when the car was cold.
So I changed the oil, and thinking I would be clever, I added the Nulon additive (before reading this thread ), and now the gear changes are WAY worse
I now have to change the oil AGAIN ?
So, this Redline stuff is proven ? Any 'proven' winners in the oil stakes ? Asking as some of this stuff can be quite expensive

yes oil make s abig difference but not sure which i have now........
mine had been notchy for 12 months from when i bought it getting gradually worse....myself being lazt checked levels but didnt replace oil unitl the other day when dog teeth were found in oil that was way to thinck as to quieten things down possibly when i bought.....
random peiods of notchy sometime no selection at all and in tight 4wd situations.....
ended up getting a 2nd hand box as it was to $$ to pull apart and start rebuilding (From fester @ all 4x4 parts minden) good price and good late model box...........
costly mistake for myself being lazy and not getting new oil first up of good quality or just an existing prob disquised who knows???
i always assumed clutch but enquired about box to those in the supposed know....... but custom offroad actually had a decent look and while what they found wasnt exactly what i wanted to hear-> i can drive it now....
new box still notchy but the sort of good healthy notch which makes you relise your driving a truck not a lancer

Yeah, I have heard different stories from different people Some say the additves make it beter, others say it makes it worse. Im just hoping it is somehow 'additive' related and not a farked gearbox
We'll see what some fresh oil does Im still a bit hesitant to try the Redline stuff, at over $100 its almost halfway towards a second hand box
I was running lubrimax sythetic and replaced it with the redline - made stuff all difference BUT replacing the original whatever was in it to the lubrimax made the world of difference.
Trying to get it to shift even better was an expensive exercise but somethings you just have to try.
