Roof lights.

Want to put some lights on the roof for night comp work. Dont need long distance illumination just around the car at about a 45`Deg angle and was thinking of using hella flood lamps instead of driving lights. Has anyone tried this before and if so how did it work.

well i have a set of 240S AND 170S ANDDDDDDDDD,140S lightforce lights on my roof and its awsom the 240s with std lenses and 170 with combo lenses straight and the 140s out at about 45 and down abit as a side light with yellow flood lenses and thats just on the roof lol lol lol more light than the MCG ALMOST lights on the roof work realy well jus have to watch out for low branches

For what you want flood lamps sound like a good idea Drafty.

With regards to the Lightforces on the roof, they are made out to be super tough, how do you think they'd cope with low branches? To be totally honest i think it's a bit of a moot point. I can't remember the last time I went under ANY low branches let alone branches that were substantial enough to do any damage.

In Victorian events eg Simex night pursuit I often brake branches off with my roof lights.

the hella work lamps are pretty sweet they are used by all the logging comanies around here.
Tough and good light but not very long range but for what you want sound like the go.
I would use 2 of these

Just remember because they have 2 globes the wattage equals 110wats each so watch your amps on your alt.

I have 2 of these to fit to my ute. These are nice lights too. Picked up the pair gor under $50 at an auction of a logging company.

I have a set of lightforce on the bar and a set or Cibie oscars centered on a rack on the roof wanted rectangle ones for beside these, think i,ll go with the hella 1530's. Thanks for the feed back guys. Appreciated.

I have a roof bar with 2x hella 181 spots and 2 hella 155 spots. these work great. 181's set straight and 155s set at about 20 degrees off center. I get a 180 degree plus viewing angle, this enables me to see the gound by the back wheels easly. Recently I changed the 155's for some spreads and lost a lot of the foward viewing range but gained more side. so I'mgoing to refit the 155's and add the spreads to have 6 light and have the best of both worlds.

If you want to run 4 or more roof light then I susgest using 55w bulbs, less current draw and almost the same out put.

well it would be ok if i drove a zook damo they are along way from the side of the track and any over hanging branches

but i dont and in vic there are plenty of good but slightly over grow trks where i live and with a big truck ya get them all the time (swb niss 4-5 inch lift 2half body and 37s put yo up there closer to the branches )

also the good things about light force lights is the mounting system that if i do hit a branch the can fold back out of the way with out snaping of like almost 90 degs

I know the lightforce are tough and watched Cheezy roll on his but not long ago i was out with Tony Dodds and he clipped a branch at slow speed with one of his lightforce and it snapped clean off the roof. It never looked like it was going to cop it.

Damo I think Hayden is talking about the standard mounts on the lights. The way you aim them up and down is they pivot right near the base and they can actually tilt back so the light points straight up, Ie if they hit a branch.

Reminds me of a recent warranty claim on some Lightforces... the truck was written off in a severe head on... Yes sir... warranty claim? errrr....

The base survived it actually broke the housing its self. It must have allready been cracked as it hardly even hit the branch.Either that or it was faulty from the start.

I have taken out tree branches with mine and all it has ever done is fliped them back on the mounts, and did some possum spotting.
