SuperCharging a 1.3 Sierra?

Post by BundyZook »

What would be the biggest probablem with doing this? what would be the best thing to pull the supercharger off? are there any major hassle with doing this? Has anyone on this board done this? would turboing it be better for any particular reason? this would be only to improve offroad use.

any ideas?

carb or efi

Post by Pinball »

currently carb, future efi... Eaton will drive both apparently..

prefer to raise power in manageable steps...

1.3 -> 1.6 -> efi -> charged

all in time grasshopper....

Will be cheaper to just go 1.6 efi charged. Less dicking around too.

And manageable steps? I wouldn't worry too much, 1.6 efi + a supercharger will be like night & day compared to a carb'd 1.3 but it's hardly like dropping in a worked big block

is there an EFI version of a 1.3? i really dont want to change motors completely and need all the other stuff assosiated with changing to a bigger motor but just changing to EFI and then charging would be alright.

you could fit a G13B........Jimny EFI motor, but it would be a brave move on your part cos you'd need to give your left nut to buy it! VERY DEAR

You can just get the injection manifold from a later model zook and it will bolt on. Do a search there is a fair bit of information about it.

EFI

Post by Damo »

Later model Swifts prolly had EFI. Should have had G13s too. That might be a way to go.

right..

stop forgetting about the little suzishops....

i had a 1.3 efi supercharged sierra..

i used the single point throttle body and manifold from a 1.6 vitara.(you can get a 1.3 single point for sierra also).it used a aisin supercharger from a 2cyl subaru running 20psi.you can use the toyota gze supercharger and hook it up to a switch so you can turn it off and on..the 1.3 still runs fine with just the injection.

the throttle body is not hard to come by and can be had for around
$300 to $650... :D

just wish mine didnt blow up...

Did you think about the bang before you set the boost at 20psi?

You'd need very low compression, a very good fuel system and an intercooler probably to support 20 psi. Your intake temps would be massive.

20 psi is a lot for a supercharger! (even for a turbo really)

An old thread, I know...

Being able to switch the charger off would be handy to save fuel (I'm assuming)... and gives the zook that mad max element

But on a more serious note, I was just wondering if it were possible to get a reliable supercharger setup on a std 1.3 engine - or is it just worth going the 1.6 vitara conversion? I suppose something aroung 10psi would give far better relability than 20psi?

I'm assuming also (from what I've read) that it's not worth trying to supercharge a carby engine as it would be hard to tune properly, and it would be either running rich or lean all the time. So you would have to factor in the cost of an efi manifold and associated costs (efi fuel pump, new fuel lines etc...)

What I'm really trying to get at is would it reliably give similar or better performance to the 1.6 vitara engine?

After thinking about it; I would imagine that it would probably end up costing about the same for a less relable engine... What are other people's thoughts?

Cheers,

Nick
