Got to change gearbox's in my 40... any tips or tricks?
also, the donor gearbox doesn't have a bellhousing, so i was wondering, can i just drop the gearbox (minus bellhousing) from my truck, and just reattach the other gearbox, or do i need to pull the bellhousing and swap all that gear over

So youll need an engine crane or block and tackle.
mine does not have a crossmember (76 fj40 as well).... but the PO was an interesting man...

remove it from the bellhousing.
blew my gearbox friday night, got towed from ballarat. changed my gearbox in my stone driveway saturday morning, drove to robe saturday arvo.
if you have access to a block and tackle, and dont care about the paint on your doors. put a piece of 2x4" wood, running between the doors and run the hook through the floor in the cab. found this the eaisest way to get it in without a jack.
they are heavy. but id still rather change 10 of them then 1 GQ gearbox.
tip: put the gearbox into the highest gear (4th or 5th if avail.) before removing the gearstick. this allows you to turn the input shaft easiest.

GBox Removal
If you have to remove it from underneath, (the hard way), and on the grass, (an even harder way!!!) put your trolley jack on a board or sheet of mdf. This allows you to wheel the jack backwards and forwards a little easier.
Genitals are funny!
box change
Ihave used a couple of tie down / ratchet straps around the chassis rails and under the box in conjunction with a trolley jack. Takes a bit of fidling but is safer than a heavy box on yourself and bend shafts.
Custom body work by trees and rocks...
