4runner fuel economy

hi guys, after a recent trip down to the act, i realised exactly how bad fuel economy was. got about 380 km's out of a full tank, that works out to be 15L /100km or roughly 6.6km/L thats sitting on around 110/120 highway from newcastle. imagine how bad the thing is around town! seriously thinking of doing and engine exchange possible with a commonwhore V6 out of a VS wouldn't mind a supercharged version but i hear they are very thirsty also, what about leus V8's? after ideas at the moment

Id get easily 450+ from a 55l tank in mine 2.4 diesel with it sitting on about 2,900 RPM at 100k/hr fully loaded...

which engine? that is about right for a 22R or the V6, they are shockers, though if you nurse them they can do better, I used to get my 22R bunderas down to about 12.5 - 13l/100km if I babied them on the highway and kept the speed down to under 100. by comparison my turbo'd 4.2 diesel 80 series could go as low as 11l/100km on the highway, with 35's and 5" lift.

the cost of any conversion will never be recovered in lower fuel costs. if you save 2 litres per hundred km putting in a commodore V6 it doesn't take a mathematical genius to work out you have to drive about 200,000km to recover the $4000 you spent on the conversion. not worth it if you're only doing it for economy. and if you do a converion to get more power, you will use MORE fuel. You need to either accept that you own a petrol powered 4WD and the economy will be ordinary at best, or upgrade to a diesel and sacrifice power and capital cost for lower fuel cost, or buy a small 4 cylinder hatchback and marvel at how little fuel they use.

what would a gas conversion cost? anyone running the v6 on gas?

I had a 4runner with a 3.8lt V6 and that was thirsty didn't matter what I did fuel consumption was always about the same 350 - 370km a tank. But a heap more fun then a 22R. Lets face it if you what fuel economy buy a nifty fifty

well, i just got back from a weekend in gramps, and my 2.4 diesel did 450k's to a tank, and could have got another 20-30, but it was too far to skip beufort and continue on to ballarat. i didn't know how low i could run it until it was empty, and i know that diesels shouldn't be run on empty

The toyota V6 doesnt like running on gas if you read the hand book it says it somewhere. I had mine converted to gas 91 RV6 and only got 100000 k's out of it before the head gasket went again, and there were always air leaks between the gaskets . Eventually went to Commodore V6 and havent looked back.

I did a full service on my 94 RV6 4Runner just before heading down the coast for a week. Running on PULP I managed 440km's out of the tank (the light wsn't even on) and if you adjust because of the tyre factor that's closer to 500. Sitting on 100-110.

How may litres did you use?
my manual v6 94 runner usually has the light on around 400-410 and takes about 60 litres, calculated out for the tank size of 72litres gives me a max range of about 480k
So if I was to fill just before the light comes on I've got another ~50 odd k's in the tank.
average over 4 months ( mainly city ) 14.7l/100k or 6.8 k/l or 19 mpg
all running on ulp

Yeah I think it used about 55L. Mine has a 65L tank (I thought they all did.)

I know the earlier one's only had a 65 litre tank but I thought they all changed to the 72 litre tank around '92 ish. Your manual will confirm/deny tank size, mine is the 72 litre bucket.

1994 model mate, and the manual says 65L. Plus, thats how much it took when i ran out of fuel once
