Grrrr at the crapo fuel economy of the 3.5L NL - Have been a v8 driver for 15 years and switched to 4x4 last month or so. But shit a brick the fuel economy of my NL is woeful. I ahve been driving it really easy too to try and keep the fuel bill down, but the least amount of fuel i can use is around 15l/100 which around the same as a carby V8 that you give a biut of stick to.
IS the diesel heaps cheaper to run? Cos i notice the cost of diesel is huge, so does the diesel efficiency get cancelled out by the greater cost of diesel? Is it possible to use diesel alternatives and are they cheaper?

Hey I too have a 2.5 TD but on a SWB. The best I have managed is 7.8L/100km on one of my trips to the outback. On another occasion, $200 worth of diesel got me 3200km!

I drive a 2.8itd deisel.NJ. My vehicle will give me ( on my last test )...8.92..klm. per litre .Not shaw what this is in litres per 100/klms....but on a good run i have got over 800/klms from a 90litre tank..(..with the red light flashing..)
The only mod,s i have to affect fuel consumption figures are ;
31x10.5 tyres...K&N AIR filter and 2.5inch exhaust system

Returned on average 14-15l/100 in my 1992 2.5 turbo diesel on a recent trip to Queensland and Fraser Island. The truck was well loaded with 5 people on board luggage, fridge and towing an all steel 6x4 carac off road trailer loaded with camping gear and christ knows what else a family needs for a week on Fraser. Between Melb and Noosa I tried to sit on 110 kmph but hills would slow us to 85-90.
Anyone interested in a 1992 turbo 2.5 yell out. The truck is up for sale. Not going to rip the extras off it and leave it bare. Has 238,000 km on the clock.

2005 TD 100 series GXl wagon . Stock except bar and tyres . Plan on doing lots of touring in this one.
I regularly check the fuel economy on my NL 2.8ITD and get 12l/100km around the city. Country trips for me are worse at about 13-14l/100km (due to overtaking and sitting on 110-120 kph). The 3.5 V6 should be the reverse and have improved economy for country driving.

greatest consumption (18ltrs/100km) was pulling camper on dirt roads to woods point and 2 days doing a lot of the tracks around woods point (worth every cent in diesel and then some !!!!)
have fitted snorkal, unifilter, run the motor on synthetic oil and use biodiesel. to be honest not a lot (if any) difference to the consumption i got without them!!

I record my fuel records in a spreadsheet.
Since I purchased the vehicle new in 2001 the trend has increased from 16L/100K to 18L/100K.
Worst consumption is on the blacktop at over 100KPH with a load on the roof punching a headwind.
Best consumption is an unladen vehicle on the blacktop with a tailwind.
Tracks and hard sand at low speed are also pretty good.
Ran PULP for a while and got better fuel consumption but the additional price was not worth it. In addition on outback trips PULP is not available.

I average around the 15/100kpm, nearly to the mark. I do have to replace the air filter, which is pretty dirty, so this may improve things. But I knew about heavy 4wds chew the fuel. I had a SWB '81 Nissan Patrol 3.3 diesel, non turbo. Gee it used rev well but it also was pretty thirsty.
So Richard, would that mean that you've recorded your total fuel consumption for a year? It would be good to see how many dollars you've spent on fuel to keep your rig movin'? I know that i've put heaps of fuel through my beast but haven't had it for a year yet and don't record fuel consumptions either.

Have recorded my petrol dockets over a 3 year period except for a gap of 7 months in 2003 when I got a bit sick of it. Petrol cost this year has got a bit ugly having done a couple of decent outback trips.
Interesting point about the air filter as mine was replaced (paid for it but didn't check) at the 90K service just before a 9.5K outback trip. On a recent trip to Hill End the engine was being starved. Thought it was bad fuel but after knocking the dust out of the air filter seemed to fix the problem.
Probably should replace it more regularly.

I find the DOHC 3.5L isnt too bad on fuel. Around town we get 7.7km/1L or 13L/100km, however you want to look at it. This is with a custom made roof top tent on (big rectangle box, full length of roof, roughly 30cm tall), with no wind deflector (yet to be made). On the highway econ goes to shit when we are in convoy, damn diesels slowing down on hills means we use more fuel
In comparison my EF Fairmont (extractors + CAI) uses 12.8L/100km around town, but drops to 9L/100km when on the highway (gotta love a 700km range with only 65L of fuel). I would say that the mighty pajero is a pretty economical car if you consider its boxy shape and the weight of it.

ive got a np did... i cry if it uses more than 10l/100km around town... and if it dosent fall to around 8.7l/100km out of town i wonder why
if im in open country sitting on ~120km/h i wont fill up untill 900km comes up on the trip meter - that generally has given me a 75-80l fill up of the standard tank
my average over 16k km's is 9.5 (and i travel heavy (must get some polairs) with goodies on the roof)
i doubt my diesel would hold up anyone in a convoy

Wow! What a huge difference in economy between the 3.2l DiD and the 2.8l TDI. When I was looking to buy my Pajero I wanted a DiD, but unfortunately they were outside my price range. Heaps more power with the DiD too (121 kW versus 92kW).
