Definition of a Diff, Axle, Housing......
Well I know what they all are, but I see no uniformity when people talk about these items. So what does each term mean to you when you are talking about it, selling one etc.
"I busted my Diff"
One is talking about the internals of the differential.
"I have a Diff for sale"
One is talking about the crownwheel and spider gears.
But does it include the thirdmember/carrier, or the whole housing disc to disc?
Is the diff housing just the thirdmember/carrier or is is the axle housing aswell...
Ok, so you get my point.
So what do you use and what does it cover?

they way I use the terms - feel free to disagree:
diff, differential: on its own does not really describe anything, needs to be used in conjuction with another term to complete its definition eg:
differential (or final drive) crownwheel and pinion, or ring and pinion: the big gears in a diff that do the driving and provide the final drive ratio.
differential spider gears; planet gears: the little gears that run on the cross shaft(s) in the carrier
differential side gears, sun gears: the bigger little hears that are attached to the axle shafts
differential carrier: the bit that the crownwheel is bolted to, that the side and spider gears live inside, the bit you replace when you fit a detroit or airlocker.
differential centre housing: the third member case that the pinion and carrier are attached to by bearings.
differential centre: the complete third member assembly including gears and carrier
other related terms:
third member: the detatchable, removable differential assembly in banjo axle setups. salisbury type axles do not have a detatchable tird member. Interchangeable with "differential centre"
axle: on its own, is indeterminate and needs to be qualified along the lines of:
axle shaft: the shaft that transmits drive from the side gears to the hub
axle housing: the steel tube with a bulge in the middle that you bolt the third member to (banjo type) or including the centre housing (salisbury type). the axle shafts go inside.
pinion bearings: the tapered roller bearings supporting the pinion shaft
carrier bearings: the tapered roller bearings supporting the carrier
NOTE: some publications interchange the terms "centre" and "carrier", eg haynes manuals name them one way, gregorys the other.

Unless it's qualified by subsequent: Centre, housing, gears etc....
Just "diff" to me says WMS2WMS.....
Busted my diff - could be bent the housing or damaged internals....untils it's qualified - it's just saying the Diff in it's entirity is busted
