40 Series Extended Shackles

I have been told extended shackles are not legal (in Qld at least). Can anyone confirm this and also let me know pro's and cons of fitting these (legally or not).

I'm looking to get a little more lift and my shackles are almost verticle at the moment. I know I can go for longer springs or even fit longer main leaves for more height but I am interested in hearing about longer shackles. Do they also give more articulation or hinder it?

Oh, and what would someone expect to pay for an extended shackle kit if they did not have access or the ability to make up their own?

I think the best price I have seen for a pair of shackels including bushes was around 160-170, that's for a hilux though so I don't know how differet it would be for a cruiser.

id be interested too...

i know someone else who has just purchased a set for his hilux and is running them round the streets so if i could do the same i probly would..

his are 3" and im told give about 2" lift so if you already had a 2" lift does that mean youd get a total of 4"?

also i would think the ride could be a bit better if the longer shackles produce a better angle for the springs rather than straight down I have now.

Whatever you increase the shackle in length, it will only amount to half of that in lift because your'e only lifting 1 end of the spring. 4" longer shackels would = 2" lift.
If you keep the same spring, the angle of the shackle won't change for the better cause the spring won't reach any further.

In my research I came across a company in QLD that claim to be the only people that sell extended shackles that are legal to fit in QLD. Jeep City at Rainbow Beach sell 2 kits for the 40 series, 1.5" and 2". The kit includes front and rear spring shackles, bolts, bushes and an engineers certificate for $350 per kit.

Although it sounds expensive I think it may be worthwile considering it comes with engineers cert. Seeing that 2" extended shackles only give 1" lift I'm not in a rush to go out and buy them but I would still like to hear about any advantages (other than 1" lift)or disadvantages to fitting them.

Come on all you gurus. Help a brutha out. :D

That's 175 a pair, which isn't too bad after having looked at the sites of the other 4wd places that sell extended shackles, and no one else mentions an engineers certificate.
Would the certificate help it get through the pits??

What are you trying to achieve :?:
Do you want the vehicle to sit high or the suspension to work :?:

One disadvantage of extended shackles is that it decreased your approach angle which can be a real hassel if you are running tyres 33 or below

I'm after a bit of both really. I'd like a bit more height, but 1" is a bit useless if there are no other advantages to them. If the extended shackles allow the suspension to flex a little better it may be worth getting some made up for the right price? I just need to know how much of an improvement in flex it will give and what negative implications there are if any to ascertain whether the outlay required is worth it. And yes, I will definately find out if the certificate is enough to legally have them on.

DRS, thanks for the info. Depending on which way this post sways my decision I might get in touch with him......but I'll tell him a little birdy told me ok? ;)

So basically what I need toknow now is, will the extended shackles be an advantage in offroad performance (articulation etc)? And if they do are there any trade offs (apart from departure angle) like stresses on mechanicals (diff housing rotation etc)?
