diffs???

Post by jcianci »

i was driving along the highway the otherday and my front right wheel locked up... not fun. the result was a stuffed front diff and replacement of all the wheel bearings. if im going to fix the diff i may as well put in a locker. whats the dif (pun) between the different makes of diffs lockrite, detroit, arb. im new to this stuff as i used to be in fast cars but found out they are only usefull in germany on autobarn. 4x4 is more fun anyway.

You sound just like me

Auto locker, air locker, traction control or weld, they're your options :)

Auto locker is detroit, lockright etc. Locked in a straight line but a ratchet mechanism allows differential action round corners. Popular but sometimes noisy on road. $700 to buy in Aus about $300 imported which many on this board are doing (inc. me :) Subtle diffs between auto locker brands but usually not a lot. People have diff opinions about which is better too so it's pretty confusing at times

Air locker is the sh!t. uses air pressure to lock the center and is on/ off at the flick of a switch. Allows open diffs fro road driving. $1100 + compressor however :?

Traction control by haultech engineering is the latest :) Like usual traction control only useful  Do a search for that one as I couldn't be stuffed explaining but basically trades a very minute amount of positive traction for reduced stress on driveline (allowing biger tyres/ harder driving w/out breakage). Popular for front diffs to save cv's a bit. I'll prolly eventually run this with auto locker rear and 33's on zuk axles see how it goes. 2500 for f+r or 1600 front.

Weld it. Cheap ($20) positive lock, not so great on road  Some love it though :)

Good luck Mick
