3 inch to 5 inch change over for GU TD6 Patrol

Post by Trol TD6 »

Gday all,

Considering upping the 3 inch lift in the GU to 5 inch (GU TD6 with powerup mods). Going to stick to dobinson as I've had that in both the GU and the GQ. :) Got a mate who will buy the 3 inch kit off me should I proceed.

Running 3 currently, ran 4 inch in the GQ with 33 MTR's. Obviously many run 5 inch and above, what's the ride like, tracking, steering etc?

If you think the 5 is a good kit, will 33's look dicky? I probably do 5 weekend trips per year and do the medium tracks. Run front air locker and 285 MTR's, will probably flick the 285/75's onto camper and offroad trailer. Apart from extending brake lines, and diff breathers which have already been done, adjustable pan hard rods, should I run drop plate and/or eliptical bushes?

I do at least 1 long trip per year, next years will be to cape. So is it sensible to run big lift for long trips etc?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Chris.

Thanks truckster. Was looking yesterday at 35 MTR's. Wouldn't have any problem pushing them so they would go pretty nicely with a 5 inch kit wouldn't they? No scurb and would match the arcticulation of the bigger kit well.

So do you know anyone running 5+ inch kit on a GU? Any info from them that would put me off?

Nice mate...got any photos you could shoot me? What did the kit set you back? Do you run drop plates or elip bushes?

only got a couple of photos on 4wdmonthly under forum meet up. not my photos some one else's. it has castor plates. full retail is around 3500 all up with sway bar disconnects etc. your best bet is to check out his site or snake racing.

If this is the sort of driving you do, why do you want or need to go to 5"s...?
I have a 3" lift and run 35's and do many hard trips (with no lockers) and don't have any problems.
When I researched for my lift, a few places said that once you go over 3"s the handling starts to suffer.
Go the 5"s if your going to run large rubber and do comps.......maybe. Hell of a lot of money otherwise.....

Trol TD6 i had a 3inch in mine now i have gone to 6" i still got my old 285/75 cooper muddies for on road and it does not look that bad, the wheel arches make them look ok they don't look out of wack. Of course 35's would be better :D but if you want to save money for the mean time 33's are ok, but if you had a GQ, for some reason you would have to run 35's on a 5"-6" lift to make it look any good. Depending what sort of springs you get and shocks, that depends how well you travel on the road. Try keeping your sway bars on this will decrease roll and i would really suggest drop brackets, this will allow your caster come back to stock and also your levelling out your control arms thus improves/helps flex, so over all handeling has not changed all that much. But if you are doing more touring than hardcore offroad i would suggest save some money and keep the 3" and get a body lift.(bare in mind, mine is a ute)
Hope that helps.

i kinda wanted to do what your planning but i stopped more because of cost and a few other things.

1. I have LTR's and they arent long enough (i may be able to fit 4" coils  )

2. Other extras such as panhards, brake lines castor

3. Engineering it (has to be done )

4. my ome 2" lift is actually clearing my 35" mtr's (go figure)

Dont get be wrong i want to do it but there are very few decent long travel shocks, i would be looking at KONI truck shocks or LTR's from 80 series or but then you would have to modify your shock towers or maybe OME L's

Any other long travel shock i.e. Tough dog ralphs, ProCompe & Ranchpoo cant take the weight of a large 4by like a GU wagon, i seen and heard so many people telling me that tough dogs are failling apart.

If i did anything am probably going to see if some 4" coils can go in but will probably need panhards. will most likely settle on some 3" coils.
