Looking at building a rock buggy!

Hi all,

I was wondering what size and grade steel I should use and prefer to keep the cost down so if weight is the sacrifce then so be it. Any one got suggestions on inner and outer specs, also if any one knows where I can get hold of info on building them i.e Pics mesurements stuff like that, would alos be cool :>

Ps. it will have high HP Chev plus nissan running gear so strength will be important :>

Search search and search. All the info you want is on pirate4x4.com and on here (to a much lesser extent).

In the past Sam (Strange Rover) has said that all the haultech buggies are made from mild steel pipe.

What happened to the Rangie project? Sounds like all the running gear is going to be put into the buggy???

have a mate selling one

its sorta '42 jeep based in looks all tig welded
nissan diffs , coil overs , left hand steer , all suspension done an screw on panel work......tapered in at the rear

currently setup with a chev / T700 and hilux transfer

can b sold without these if u prefer.......besides , box an transfer is mine anyway

i'd have to check , but without driveline , as it sits , prob around $7000 i think

i'll get some pics an email them to u if u like

This is interesting!

The only other "BUGGY'S" outside of QLD are Sam Kecks old rig, Jamie Ways and Trailcraft!

I would be interested in seeing Pics of it!

Back on the subject!

The best buggys to base your design on would be the "Twisted Custom" rigs. They look sweet as and very well designed! RUFFs buggy was based on these! Where as Sams Lockless and Mine were based on the Zero G chassis!

Keep the Steel as small as possible, 42 od with 3.5 - 4 wall being plenty!

The whole idea for building Buggys is to cut down on the weight and still retain strength.

Mine weighs 1410kg, the twisted Custom buggys are around 1350kg.

Mate, he really should look at selling it in here.

Yes there are heaps of time wasters but there are also heaps of guys really thinking about getting into the sport!

Its a Shame he is selling it, There WILL be a very big move in regards to Rock Crawling in OZ next year! ;) ;)

POS I've seen the Zero G chassis in the "buggy" thread in Rover but are there any pics of the "Twisted Custom" rigs.

How long untill you let everyone know what going on next year? Just make sure you give us enough time to build something if it going to be that BIGGER change in OZ crawling.

i can think of another 3 off the top of my head in NSW/ACT outside of sydney. there would be quite a few more in sydney too i would imagine.

not everyone who builds these things is interested in the queensland events and/or posts on this board.

the chassis was originally setup with nissan diffs

then chassis mods and went to mogs when he was modifying it for himself

then back to nissan when a guy was keen to buy it in that configuration

so yeh , it has nissans and has progressed

Was this one of the buggys that they had advertised in one of the trader mags ages ago?? One was JEEP based and the others like Rangie???? With options on wheel and tyre combos?

I live a sheltered little life up here and really did not know!

Its farking great that there are so many BUGGYS getting about!

I hope we can get some of them on the Comp scene next year! (those that want to that is, i understand that some are happy just to keep doing what they are doing, thats fine)

I've been looking at building a buggy (seriously), have done some investigation on different idea's/combinations etc, and was under the impression that your chassis layout was based on the 'bluetorch' layout....

The more I look at their stuff, and other people's buggys, the more I like the layout.....

I have considered other 'compact' variations which involve some 'creative' (& well engineered) approach's, these been based on a 'smaller scale' as opposed some of the 'BIG' buggies which I think are impractical in a competitive environment (not to mention out of my budget).

I'm considering 4 wheel steer, which would change the way I do things (frame wise), just tentitively, purely because of the 'competition rules' debates which seem to vary from comp to comp......

Which brings me to another point.....

From where I'm standing, at this stage I'm intending on building the buggy purely for my own enjoyment, if it fit's into the 'criteria' for some events like PUOSU or the like, great, if not fine.

Competitions..........where do people feel 'the sport' is headed in Australia? I look at some of the USA stuff in amazment, looking at their competitions and the like, which seems to be a world appart from the Aussie 'scene'......... Obviously there are alot of reason's why etc, Insurance & Liability being the biggest, but I'm interested to hear peoples opinions about 'if' the australian scene will develope to cater for & involve 'purpose built' buggies.....

If you go to the comp and events section i think most of your questions have now been answered!!!! :armsup: :armsup:

Also the Lockless and the jekyl are nothing like the bluetouch frames. Ours are very very close to the ZERO G but with a few different bits!

Yeah thanks champ! I saw it in the for sale section and gathered that it was a different truck to the one they had advertised (Im sure it had rego, wasnt so much buggy style just tubed rear section) It was cj6 or 7 front clip, maybe with rangie diffs and stuff! He had other 'creations' at the time but were alot dearer then the Jeep based one!

yeh that was matts old play , that rig was CJ front an tube rear on a rangie chassis with nissan diffs

current one is all new , slightly unfinished

will def try an get pics by end of weekend , then someone can post them since i have no idea these days since it changed
