TOM
Steve .............HYPO has also bent a couple of tierods into pretzels since gettin the Q axles unda the lux we had some made up outta 33.4 x 6.35 seamless as we hoped it would deflect enough qnd return b4 it bent ..............UM wrong
Since then I sold my seamless arm to him and we sleeved it with some 4mm thick pipe bout 42-44 od from memory he ran this at the TRIALS and has also done a few trips round our way it has a few marks ova it and at worst i would say it has a VERY slight bend ..........
His truck copped a canning also ova the weekend as im sure yours did 2
and so far ,so good .....
I have gone 1 step further by gettin the same made up but outta 33.4 x 9.01 seamless which i then sleeved with the same tube as we did HYPOS ...mine will prob last longer cause my tierod clears MACCAS speed humps so i have no chance of bending it id say LOL ..........
We are also using the larger internal threaded Tierod ends as u would have as standard ...............
cheers Dan

i bend my double chrome moly one as well and sometimes bend the tie rod ends.
if it was any stronger you will bend the tie rod ends more often.
If you fit the GQ ute tie rod ends to a new tie rod and get the tapers machined out to suit it should be a lot better.
thats my next move ... might be able to go triple chrome moly then

I made mine from 32mm 4140 (Cr-Mo) solid and drilled a 20mm hole through the guts. I had made some from hollow bar as decribed by others but this is a mild steel and its yield strenght is that of mild steel and wont return to its orginal shape when deflected much. 4140 has a much higher yeild point so it can deflect a lot further before it is bent beyond it yeild point and wont return to it original shape. I bent 5 other track rods untill i made the 4140 and have not had a prob since.

If you don't mind me asking why did you drill the hole through the middle of the solid bar???
Must have been some good equipment.
I have a solid 4140 tie rod and got it machined to suit ute tie rods with the internal thread. For my use I think it will be fine
I have a feeling that the hole through the middle is to allow more flex before bending/cracking... but just wanted to know for sure.

how are you guys bending these tie rods? on rocks and logs?
Is there any way you can put a spacer in to get your tie rod any higher? Would it be possible to make a guard which mounts off your diff to protect the tie rod? surely we can get around the bandaid fixes and eliminate the problem.
just a thought
cheers
