Defender major service, which oils?

Post by mabsydney »

My '99 model defencer 110 extreme is almost due for a major service.

I've not done this before and I am wondering what oils I should use for:

1.gearbox

2.transfer case

3.diffs

I have the workshop manual, but I wonder if it is different in Australia as it is warmer here. Also I don't know if the LR recomded oils are available here. Land Rover Australia recomended I use Mobil S 10w40 for the sump, whereas the manual is recomending 5w/30, 40 or 50.

Thanks much,

Martin

Defender major service, which oils?

Post by swamp »

We had a guest speaker from Penrite at club meeting the other day
He stated that because td5 uses engine oil to operate fuel pump it needs to be quite thin at start up. 5w oil would be used in a low k engine in a relatively cool part of australia ie melbourne .10w oil would probably be more suited to OZ climate .
I would contact penrite as they have a lot of imformation in regard to td5's and oils
In regard to gearbox and diffs I would follow the manual.

Michael

T-case and diffs: 80W90 gear oil
Gearbox - there are lots of options - I have seen people use Castrol VMX 80, ATF, and other oils...

The factory fill in the gearbox is Caltex 'Land Rover MTF 94', a 75w-80 GL-4 gear oil. Caltex 75w90R is used in the T/Case and diffs. Avoid using an ATF in the gearbox. You'll get better gear changes and longer gearbox life using a 70w/75w-80/85 GL 4 gear oil.
I've used the factory fill, Castrol Syntrans, and currently using Castrol VMX-80, but I'll be swapping it out for either Syntrans or Redline MTL soon, as the synchro action was definately better with Syntrans.

A good chart that lists suitable gear box oils and explains SAE gear and engine oil viscosities can be found here, courtesy of Red 90.

FWIW, my preferred diesel oil is Delvac 1, Mobil's top of the line full synthetic diesel oil.
Although Mobil 1 0w-40, Castrol SLX 0w-40, etc are API CF, ACEA B3/B4 rated diesel oils, and are excellent oils and fine to use, I prefer the more robust additive package of a dedicated heavy duty diesel oil like Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 (API CF, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4, ACEA E5,E4,E3), Castrol Dynamax 10w-40 (API E4) , Caltex Delo 400 or Fuchs Titan Ultra series.
The bottom line is, you really couldn't go wrong with any Xw-40 dino, semi or full synthetic diesel rated oil.

The other interesting thing is I can buy Delvac 1 much more cheaply than Mobil 1 0w-40 from a Mobil depot.
