Water Storage

What do the touring guys use to store water on long trips? I want to store around 50L. I've seen the 4WD interiors and the ARB flexi tank. Any other ideas?

I use the white opaque 25 litre square containers. Not sure on their official name. However they fit well side by side and play nicely with jerry cans. I think they cost about $10-20 each. Best thing is you can leave them at the campsite to reduce weight or for people staying behind.

I saw some taps that actually replace the screw top lid so instead of farking around with the standard tap you can just lay it on its side.

Better than paying $200 or so for a bladder that leaks inside your car.

i dont think so as when full it would have minimal affect as there is 200l of diesel under the ass end rooftop camper on top + food and all the other shit to last 4 weeks away

How bout something like a flexible caravan type tank, Or user a few drums linked together with pipe, with a tap to the back door, and a filler just inside the window that can sit behind the seats above the axle.

I use a 50l caravan tank works a treat and only cost $80

Best not to have all your water in just 1 tank, in case it leaks or becomes contaminated.

PVC should be banned - gives off molecules that closely resemble female chromozone and cause problems to males (reproduction and defects in sex organs of newborn). No way would I store water in PVC.

i was going to get a caravan jobbie but i ran out of time before a trip so boought a 587 (outback?) tank and mounted this behind my cargo barrier. then ran ppipe to the rear door througha sureflow marine pump and tap. the pump is then wired in and ii just turn the tap on in the back and away i go.

i origionally hard wired it but now it plugs into a marine plug at the back of the car so as to stop the tap turning on by accident if it is knocked etc.

I bought a 55l flexi-tank, and built a wooden frame to contain it on the floor behind the front seats. The "lid" over the top made a nice flat base for storing boxes of alcohol , mattresses, sleeping bags and soft bags of clothes (all in front of the cargo barrier...) but also limited tank capacity to slightly less than 40 litres.

In the rear I carried three 10 litre containers in a plastic tub we found at Bunnings - two side by side without taps, and a third across the end with a tap. When a container leaked early in the trip the tub caught most of the water (the bung was cross-threaded - sealed well until the water heated up, then pressure pushed water out . I put the bung back in properly and it never leaked again. ) . The one with the tap became our drinking water container, which we kept topping up with water suitable for drinking. The other two containers we used for more dubious water for washing etc.

After 8 days touring we didn't touch the flexi-tank contents, working solely from the three containers and topping up when the opportunity arose. When we got home the contents of the flexi tank were definitely tainted, despite following all the cleaning recommendations. But in an emergency I'm sure we would have loved to drink it, female hormones or not.

this is the one(engel). fits nicely along the back of my cargo barrier in the defender so should fit most 4bys.

i use a caravan tank too, 50 litres. 12v pump to a tap in the rear bumper, fill in the wheel arch. cost nothing, old man worked for a caravan joint .

I used 4 of the 20ltr green plastic jerry cans in the back of the Bravo on long trips. I took out the back seats, made a false floor and also made a wooden box to hold the containers. These were fitted centrally as to keep the weight even.

Now in the Patrol I have a stainless steel tank made by Longrange Automotive that fits behind the cargo barrier. It holds 60lts of water.

Did a Simpson crossing last August using the WAA line. Removed the rear seats and anchored 3X20 litre jerry cans across the front of the cargo barrier.

I have heard of this too, though mainly when they are mounted on the roof racks etc as the sun warms the water and it draws shit out of the pvc.
Though, I have no proof, but have heard of this from a few sorces.

I saw in 4x4 monthly Brad Newmans truck and it had one in it.
When I rang them a year later he had just pulled it out and I got half price about $250.
They're a bit over $500 new.........
