Dirt cheap crawler

Post by slosh »

I have read with interest the thread on adapting quadratrac low range to LT 230 t/c.... as I was considering putting LT 230 in my lux. Anyhow, I got to thinking, is the reason behind the interest in this simply because it is a bolt in fit (with hard bits done by machinists of course)?

If so, is their any other combination of parts that would do a similar job, like Hilux duals- eg. Hilux to LT 230, Hilux to L/C, Dana to LT230 etc.... in other words- are there other combos out there that might not be bolt in but maybe simpler to adapt?

The main attraction of the quadratrac conversion Josh is that it doesnt make the driveline any longer so there is no need to shorten the rear tailshaft and lengthen the front which makes it particularly useful in short wheelbase vehicles or on vehicles such as RangeRover and Discoveries where there is insufficient room to move the transfercase rearwards. If you have a nice long rear propshaft and don't mind reorganising the driveline then a hilux or GU/GQ Nissan reduction box adapted to the front of say a Landcruiser, LT230 or Dana Transfercase is feasible too.

I have a nice long propshaft (rear diff moved 150mm back from std).

I am starting a new driveline from scratch.

Where do I go from here?

I think you should check with Marks 4wd adaptors as to price and availability of a hilux doubler to a Landcruiser T/case, offset LandCruiser diff at rear . If money was available I would also look at a ten speed (5 spd +2 spd splitter in bellhousing)Toyota Dyna gearbox. This would give up to 40 forwardspeeds in total although some will overlap.

Thanks Bill. I can make a start on it.

Checked with Marks today. They do not have Hilux doubler to Cruiser t/cases. Sort of makes sense- why would they when they developed the Cruiser Crawler? As for LT230 adaptors, what are they???

Have leaned tho that Klune V adapts from T700 box to Cruiser t/c- expensive but do able option for Rovers with T700's already.
