Castor Correction

Post by GQAndrew »

Can someone tell me if vibrations between certain speeds, with NO shaking of the steering wheel could be a result of the castor. After having the vibration in my SWB after the lift I asked the shop about fitting castor correction and they said thats not the problem, as incorrect castor would be causing the steering wheel to shake and the car to wander at high speed. But after more reasearch, i have read that the castor correction may actually help with my vibration between 35-50 kmh, where there is no steering wheel wobble.....could the castor correction help?

Vibration

Post by The Big Green Meany »

Sounds like the tail shaft angle to me, Sometimes you can can rtaise a shorty 80 mm with no probs sometimes you will get this Vibration after just 40mm, Depends on the car.. Have yopu tried a Gearbox crossmenber spacer yet? This will lower the angle of the tail shft and may get rid of your vibration. I had the same Vibration in my Shorty but it was raised 5'' and I had to get a Dble Cardenal joint made up..
Try the Gear Box spacer that may help.

Tried with no success, also drove with tailshaft removed, vibration was still there, however nowhere near as bad :? :?

What Phanard Rods are you running?? Original or custom?? and how much did you pack your crossmember?? Have you shifted the diff back at all?? greased your tailshaft lately?? how old are the bushes in the front end?? Any poly bushes you run in your rig will be fuct so replace with genuine bushes only....And I mean Nissan not repco!!! And balanced your wheels since you last got airbourne??

Original, but would not have thought customs were necessary for 1 60mm lift.

how much did you pack your crossmember??

10mm packers

Have you shifted the diff back at all??

Again, should this be necessary for a mild lift.

greased your tailshaft lately??

Yep

how old are the bushes in the front end??

Have had front bearings done and all front end checked, and all OK

And balanced your wheels since you last got airbourne??

Problem still occurs with different wheels

So... Could the castor correction help, or is that for a different type of vibration :? :? :? :?

I think the castor only affects your steering in so much as if you don't have enough, it will feel vague and floaty - too much at it will be really sensitve and twitchy...
I guess the only way this can cause vibration is if the lack of castor allows the wheels to shake... but if your wheels aren't shaking...?

Try adding more gearbox packers. I have about 17-18mm in mine. 10mm was not enough so I had to add more.

Is that OK, Ive heard its not good to add too much...

how do you do it yourself,
do you just support the transfer on a jack while tacking off and dropping the crossmember?

could be the slip joint as they change the wear spot when you lift them.
which tailshaft did you remove to test for vibes ?

The rear was removed and we drove in front wheel drive, was definately better but still there...

An Update :

Decided to try some more packers after someone suggested that the vibration with the rear shaft removed may have been the front vibrating...

Anyway, discovered that there were only 5mm of packers in there, so added another 5mm, would have to say that im 75% sure that the vibration has decreased by 50% (figure that out  )

So, tomorrow im gonna add another 5mm to try and solve it, I guess my question here is, is 15mm too excessive and going to cause any problems???? And am I going to need longer bolts if I go to 15...

Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated :P

GQ Vibration....Solved

Post by GQAndrew »

Seems to be tailshaft.....now with 15mm of packers in the vibration is only about 10-15% of what it was before..seems to only be noticeable when under load (accelerating up hills etc)

If I want to get rid of the rest, I guess I can either

a) try another 5mm, or is 20mm too much?
b) get a tailshaft balance done.

or I can just put up with it!

Well you can buy off the shelf from ARB (something priced-ok) a gearbox packer kit which comes with longer bolts for about $40 - $45. in the kit it comes with two plates for each side which will drop you transfer case 12mm which is fuck all...but then you could get more kits or get a thick plate made up however thirty mm is about the most you can go without having probs with the engine fan hitting the radiator!!! Have heard of a guy in townsville with a six inch lift kit with 50mm gearbox packers to fix the vibs......

Go the extra packers...don't be shy!!!

Yeh I have two ARB kits, but still have two plates which I havnt put on yet (i currently have 3 on each side (5mm each I think)), so may chuck the extra plates in to take it to 20 mm.
Wasnt sure if 20mm is too much, so didnt want to just go ahead
