Post by BenDover »

Hi Everyone

The wife is after me to get air con for the Feroza. I live near Brissy in QLD so can anyone recommend where I would go to get this? Anyone had to put air con in their's aftermarket?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I'm looking at your signature........SXP II :!:

From my recollection A/C was standard on these widetrack models.

What's the problem ???

That's what I thought when I bought the thing! I thought I was going crazy when I went to use the air-con the other day and there wasn't any! I figured I must have just gotten confused with all the others taht I test drove...

But I can see the dummy switch inside where the air-con switch would go so there definately isn't any.

I don't have a digital camera so I can't take photo's for you to see!

Oh and I have re-checked the advert and it doesn't say it has air-con either.

Do you know for sure that the SXP II's came with air-con?

Thanks

I wouldn't have thought any Feroza's around the early '90's would have had aircon standard? It was very rare for any car to have it standard back then.

Here's a list of the standard features for the '93 SXP from Redbook:
4 Speaker Stereo, Central Locking, Paint - Metallic, Power Door Mirrors, Power Steering, Power Windows - Front & Rear, Radio Cassette, Sports Seats, Sunroof, Wide Wheels

Those rear power windows must have been rare! There was no mention of aircon at all- the only option listed was the "rare as" LSD.

But most of the other Feroza's that I test drove all had air-con?

Either way I need to get it put in. Can anyone recommend a good place to go to? Would I need to source a second hand unit first or will they get a new one?

Thanks!

You can get the air con kits from diahatsu auto recyclers at archerfield. From memory they cost around $600 but it depends on stock and the demand is high in summer. Not sure about the install but should be pretty straight foward for an air-con dude.

Before you get too excited..... be prepared to pay out more $$$. You'll need to get a new receiver drier (well over $50) plus pay to have the whole system evacuated and leak tested. Try and get a system that's still sealed so it doesn't have crap and moisture inside the pipes too.

If it's off an R12 gassed Feroza then get a new Expansion valve fitted that's suited to the R134A gas. Mine was around $40 for the valve- it fits into the unit under the dash. Then you'll just need new oil and it will work with the new gas.

The guy said that they would need a days notice because all the units are still on the cars. So does this mean that they are still sealed?

Why will I need a new receiver drier (whatever that is)? Wouldn't the people that re-gas it test it for leaks at the same time? Won't they also fit a new expansion valve for the R134A gas too?

Sorry I'm not exactly an expert on these things...but thanks for helping me out so far! :)

A new receiver drier is supposed to be fitted everytime it's regassed (from what I've heard?) and the Feroza's have a weird arse fitting that is hard to find aftermarket.

They probably won't bother fitting the new expansion valve- the old will work, but not as well with the new gas. Mine was stuffed anyway so I got the R134A unit.

Have you got any prices to have it all installed, leak tested, gassed etc?

PS:If the compressor is the same as mine then there will be no oil drain plug on it, so the oil must be drained out with it removed from the vehicle. So if it's the old gas and you want it converted to R134A then get that done before they bolt it onto the block! ;)

BTW this place is invaluable for finding Feroza aircon parts : http://www.jayair.com.au/front.htm plug in the vehicle info and they give you part numbers etc. ;)
