Wiring issue on GQ - taillights
Wiring issue on GQ - taillights
Someones had a good stuff around on my GQ and the fusebox cover I have (1993 model) doesnt match the fuses i have (1989 model).
Dunno if this is due to bad wiring (of which there is plenty) or just a difference in model.
Can someone tell me what the order of fuses is?
Also is there known problems with wiring for dash, tail and park lights and where should I start the hunt? I havent been able to find anything... other than my top right fuse (marked as engine) keeps failing when I turn lights on. Doesnt stop lights (or engine) working but no dash and tail lights....
Wiring to fuse has no correlation to my manual
:(
Tailights worked when they were wired up to my rear speakers which may give you some idea....

First place to start with lighting issues are the front parker/indicator light. The wires pinch and short to earth. Pull the lights right out and try again, I missed the fault first time round.
Also in the rear wheel arch between the body and the chassis is a connector that can get crap in it. To check that one, disconnect the connector under the plastic plate under the front passenger seat.

I'd also have a good look around any bodgey trailer plug wiring, particularly those crappy scotch link joiners, solder them instead.
Here's your fuse list from my 89 GQ, I confirmed most the other night tracing a trailer socket issue.
Left side first.
15A Blower Motor Fan
15A Blower Motor Fan
10A Clock Audio
10A Blower Motor Fan A/C
15A Engine Control
10A Auto Transmission
20A Rear Demister
10A Meter / Back Up Lamps
10A Turn Signal
15A Left Headlamp
15A Right Headlamp
Right Side
10A Tail Lamps
10A Hazard Lamps
10A Clock / Interior Light
10A Horn
10A Stop Lamps
10A Fog Lamps
20A Rear A/C Blower
15A Rear Wiper/Washer
Blank / Spare
20A Front Wipers/Washer
15A Cigar Lighter
There seems to be three fuses that all power the Fan for some reason, and one for optional rear A/C
Have fun

Here's what mine says:
Left side first.
15A Blower Motor Fan
15A Blower Motor Fan
15A Replaces 10A Clock Audio
20A Replaces 10A Blower Motor Fan A/C
10A Replaces 15A Engine Control
15A Seat Warmer replaces 10A Auto Transmission
20A Rear Demister
10A Meter / Back Up Lamps
10A Turn Signal
15A Left Headlamp
15A Right Headlamp
Right Side
10A Engine Control Replaces 10A Tail Lamps (I know this IS tail lights and keeps blowing
10A Hazard Lamps
10A Clock / Interior Light
10A Horn
10A Stop Lamps
10A Fog Lamps
20A Rear A/C Blower
10A Tail Lamps (Definately not Tail Lamps)
15A Rear Wiper/Washer
Blank / Spare
20A Front Wipers/Washer
15A Cigar Lighter
Few differences.
Can see which fuse it is and it keeps blowing as soon as the lights are switched on even for parkers..... so I will try removing parkers at front and all wiring to rear for tail-lights and anything to do with the trailer lights.
Then do them again from scratch if need be.
The answer is in there somewhere :(

Try unplugging the rear light loom on each side on top of the chassis at the back wheel arches and see if the fuse still blows, there should be another plug further back along the chassis for the door number plate light too, I assume there's a similar plug on each side up the front. Haven't added anything electric or bumped the bullbar recently squashing the wiring loom somewhere?
Lastweek I replaced the bodgey scotch links used by the conversion guys and didn't put quite enough tape around my solder and somehow got my reversing lights joined to my tail lights so the ignition dash lights would stay on in reverse when I took the key out with the parkers on. And to boot I had ripped the rest of the loom apart elsewhere to use my redundant rear wiper switch/wires for my air locker. Luckily it flickered when I wriggled the wiring loom.

It's definately in the front half of the car and I can't see any sign of it near the headlights so I'm guessing it's got something to do with the stereo/cb installation.
Many vehicles have a tail light/headlight circuit connection to the clock & stereo to dim the display at night, might be a possibility, I'm pretty sure the GQ clock dims with the lights on.
