ticking alternator

when my fj40 is idling the alternator makes a ticking sound. at any kind of acceleration it stops. also when i switch the headlights on it clangs more loudly. (sorry i sound like an idiot with those explaintions) it's had an engine swap (350 chevy) i don't know if the alternator was swapped too. the stereo has been suffering with engine whine coming through the speakers. the headlight fuses go on a regular bases too, although they seem to be common failures in fj40's. i'm thinking of a total rewire are they expensive? an tips? ta...

dont know about the ticking, but have you tried removing the alternator belt and spinning it by hand to check for play?

also i re-wired my headlights for the 40 for about $25 a few years ago using disck-smith wires, a switch and 2 relays. That black and red 17A automotive stuff is awsome. Not a difficult job if you think about it a bit.

yeh, i should try to get it off and check tomorrow. i'm not so good at wiring. to be honest never really tried electrical work, think the whole truck could do with a rewire though, fuses keep going, mainly the headlights but also the whole dash. should probably get it checked out by a pro. i'll let you know the situation with the alternator. what's the go if it does have a bit of play?

i think its a u-call type of thing, if its not really noticable, dont do anything, but if its bad you will need to pull it to bits and replace the bearings. Or get a shop to do it for you, they tend to know when things are wrong, and have the tools to make it a simple job. Before you rip into it you might use a multi-meter to measure the voltage at the battery at idle and after you turn the headlights on, that usually gives a good indication if something is not right.

if you have a standard petrol alt, i think they are really cheap to replace, like $100 or something. I know the diesel ones are $250++ to rebuild.

If your getting alternator whine it sounds like either
a) they didn't put a condensor on the alternator (about $2.50 and fit yourself)
b) it's a cheapy stereo. However if it has a whine now and didn't before then I'd be looking for that condensor on the back of the alternator.
