wastegate actuator springs

Post by Slayer »

been tinkering with different springs in the wastegate actuator but cant get over about 8psi.. is there a place i can buy the propper springs in say 6 8 10 12 psi settings, or is there something i can do to the current spring to make it stiffer?
spring is for an arb turbs, spring that is in it is only 6psi and the motor is running rich and blowing black smoke, some more air should clean this up. somone got one out of a surf or sumthin that will let me get 9 or 10 psi??

Have you tried putting a tee in the wastegate actuator pressure feed.
you just put a tee in the line and with the spare side of the tee run a bit of hose wherever you want mabe up high out of the way and a quarter inch ball valve on the and of the hose
The more the valve is open the more psi is needed to over come this leak and makes the turbo work harder to get 6 or 9psi up to your wastegate
so intake may see 10psi but wastegate still only gets 6or 9

How bout fitting a bleed valve...?

Im slowly learning about turbos and how they work, so ignore that iif its irrelevant.

Buy an electronic gate adjuster so u can run 2 boosts, or lengtheen the rod to the gate, which compresses the spring and therefore, more boost is needed to overcome the spring

The other thing to be carefull of with this is if you have a std exhaust it can be the back pressure in the exhaust housing that is limiting the boost levels. It is normally a good ideal to put a high flow exhaust on before you turn up the boost as you will normally get a couple of psi increase just with the exhaust.

already got 2.5 inch mandrel straight through so thats no worries, turbo reaches 15 psi easy if i disconect the actuator so it can reach the boost i want, just gota get the waste gate stiffened up. have tried lenthening the rod, or is it shortenging?? which ever way comressses the spring.. tried that, doesnt seem to make any differnence...

You only get 15PSI with the wastegate completely closed/ disabled? :? Are you sure your turbo is capable of supplying the boost you want without exceeding its design specs? It is possible to overspeed and stuff them if they aren't designed to handle the flow/boost level you want.

Make sure there's no restriction on the inlet side too- otherwise you'll stuff the thrust bearing and have inlet turbine blade fragments go through your engine as they grind away on the compressor housing. Ahhh..... memories!

sorry i didnt make myself clear, the turbo reaches 15 psi by like 1900rpm with the wastegate disabled, i pussy out at that and back off, sure nothin wrong with the turbo, it would prob reach 30 psi or more, but somethin might go bang..

If you want an easy way to do it, go and get yourself a Boost Control Valve from somewhere like Turbosmart, easily fits between the waste gate and the turbo.

http://www.turbosmart.com.au

The black smoke might well be something else rather than boost pressure, spend a few bucks at a reputable diesel shop first, as you won't necessarily get more power just by increasing the boost, and you may well f--k the motor if you dont know what you are doing. More boost equals higher inlet temperatures, and with too much fuel could = bang !

If its an Safari turbo, it's made by APS who do a lot of R&D to get the most efficient setup.
Damian.

should I swim it first ?
