Toyota FJ Cruiser

What Is It?
Toyota FJ Cruiser

What's Special About It?
A modern recreation of Toyota's legendary FJ Land Cruiser, this new concept combines the utility of a truck-based sport-ute with the youthful looks of today's outdoor sports equipment. Heritage cues include round headlights, a wide narrow grille and wraparound rear windows. The concept also features side mirror spotlights, a front-mounted tow hitch and a two-piece rear hatch that retracts into the roof. The engine is a 3.4-liter V6 that produces 250 horsepower thanks to a TRD supercharger. Built on a modified Tacoma platform, the FJ has a long-travel coil-over setup in back and a standard independent up front for plenty of off-road capability.

The interior sticks to the basics with an industrial look and feel throughout. All four of the bucket seats fold completely flat to render the FJ an impromptu tent or if you decide to venture out there's a removable GPS navigation system mounted in the dash.

Why Should You Care?
A fitting tribute to the past, the FJ may have some implications in the future as well. Although most of the funky design elements won't make their way into a showroom anytime soon, Toyota may be signaling its intention of creating an all-new affordable sport-utility to slot below the new 4Runner. — Ed Hellwig
