POOR RUNNING MK/MQ L28
POOR RUNNING MK/MQ L28
your advice please .I am having problems setting point gap & ignition timing .set points to .50mm gap (but electric meter says dwell is about 30 degrees). secondly I have tried to set timing to 8degrees btdc @650 rpm .the engine ticks over ok but runs very lumpy above that revs and even worse when driven.also engine overruns when switched off (=bad timing?) This vehicle is new to me and has not had much routine maintanance,it has run ok for a couple of weeks after i bought it ( abit hesitant to accelerate at times) so i thought new points and timing was a good idea,i was wrong .any advise would be a great help.thank Jonny

Johnny, your tellin me you got an L28 patrol in Devon? Or you are from Devon and residing in Australia currently???? If you are living in the UK - how on earth is the rust - they rust badly here but I know haviong lived in the Uk how bad older cars get from rust caused by road salt!!!! Very interesting.
To answer ya question - there is a post on here already - once you have looked at it you may have your answer mate. Make usre all ya filters, plugs, leads, condensors etc are correct and good and give it another shot eh???

God of Magnificant Ideas!
Specs say ......
10 degrees BTDC @ 650 RPM ( manual gearbox)
8 degrees BTDC @ 700 rpm ( Auto gearbox in neutral position )
( both done with vacum line to dizzy disconected )
points gap is 0.45mm to 0.55mm
spark plug gap is 0.8mm to 0.9mm
If all else fails take it to a dealer and put it on a "electronic Tune scope", this will also test leads, coil etc etc.

Thank you everyone for your comments i have bought some quality points today and will have a go at it again tommorrow. As regards rust it has very little, rear windows drivers door and tailgate & none to speak of underneath i think it was undersealed when new . It is the ignition timing that does not make sence as i am sure i have set it to 8degrees btdc but it still runs like a pig .anyway we will see .Again many thanks for your help ,jonny.
Factory Electronic dizzies (280Z etc) are just about imposible to find, and no parts available to rebuild em, the magnetic ring is super brittle, so BE WARNED!! My timing was weird also, was the dizzy shaft, took it to a GOOD DYNO mob and they refit bushes for 40$, worked wonders, but like I said before, other things to look for.
