drums not working (brakes)

Post by SiKiD_01 »

has anyone had their drum brakes full of mud, and not work anymore?

i had mine full of mud after a trip, and didn't get time to clean them until about 4 or 5 days later. during that time, they stopped working, and only the front brakes are stopping me.

the hand brake doesn't work at all.

i cleaned a lot of the mud and stuff out, and theres some rust on the shoes, and shoes are at about 50-60% left.

what else should i check? the shoes are loose when i move them (without drum on) and another thing, when i pull the hand brake up, the drums dont work, but then when i step on the brake, the pedal goes hard, and works ok.

i've checked fluids, and have bled the brake system too.

how do other fix this, and is it a common problem, i have a vit as well.

thanks

seized wheel cylinders, maybe, or even the self adjuster is stuck....putting on h/brake gives a better pedal, because it moves the shoes closer to the drum (I assume your hand brake is on the rear wheels)...christover

Muds wrecks drums really quick. Clean that stuff out as soon as you can after you've been in it. Christover is on the money...
