Yep...only one class, but there will be optional hard tracks. Frank, we haven't forgotten about the modified competitors, there will be enough optional hard tracks to test the live axle Bitsa.....I'd say that your Navi better be up to scratch with their navigational skills, being one class means that it's a level playing ground for all Navi's.

Hmmm but not quite a level playing field for the guys that can't do the optional hard tracks! How can the 'standard class' vehicles complete against the modified?

Basically there's no extra points awarded for taking the optional hard tracks. The event is divided into 4 sections and you'll find that each section leader will have their own way of being devious with their respective course design. Some may use optional hard tracks for driver interest, or as a short cut (in distance, but harder/slower to drive), others may use the optional hard track with easy navigation and if you take the easy track then it may be harder navigation. This should give better traffic flow so that when a Bitsa or a Rangie is stuck on a steep rutted hill then you can go around and take the easy option without points penalty. Also, if there's a minor mechanical breakdown but you can still continue, then you're not totally out of it...take the easier options and you can still pick up the points. It's a navigation event first and foremost, with some good tracks thrown in.

The car that finished 2nd last year was a std diesel 80 with a rear locker and 34 inch JT2s. I reckon thats pretty close to standard compared to some of the competition. Your navigation skills and stamina will far out way your mods in this event.

With all the dramas we had in last years event we were quite happy to finish where we did.
Discovering the front wheel studs were rooted and the wheel was about to fall off just as we were about to start , the water pump ceased twice during the comp , being stuck behind Bitsa for one and a half hours while they cleared the track , getting food poisining and ending up in hospital the next day and then to top it all off my swag fell off the back of the tray on the way home and was never to be seen again

Peter, I think the navi has to be a member of an affiliated club as well, I think it's more to do with insurance than anything else. The car is entered in the drivers and navi's names but if you take a passenger (not a member of a club) and something happens then I'm not too sure.

There are regualr trips right up your alley particualrly in winter, Peter Cooney's trips are legendary in the club and mainly focus on Gembrook, Labertouche & Marysville. Alberto (On Patrol) runs a lot of hard trips as well, put it this way very few trips are "incident free"

yeah bitsa, pete & i went along last night, and from what i can figure out is that we need to join a club & also do a driver training course b4 the challenge as well which could be pushing it. I think i'm already a member of ccda, from when i helped at a nav night, but not sure.
I think we are going to have to join & i might have to a arrange a separte driver training course to do, if they are making us do one, more info would be good

Ok if you hurry and join there is a club profiency (basic) training course in december the next one is in march (too late). There looks to be vacancies for the december one. This entry level course is VAFWDC accredited and consists of a theory night for 2 hrs (usually a thursday) and then the practical day session at Werribee (on the following sunday). You will have to do at least this course to be able to go on club trips anyway.

Just to clarify the entry conditions...
The Paj Challenge is not open to the public. The driver must belong to an affiliated club with VAFWDC. The Navi and other passengers doesn't have to be a member of a club, but they won't be allowed to drive in the event. If the Navi and/or passengers is likely to drive in the event then the Navi must be a member of a club as well.
I don't know if the CCDA is affiliated with VAFWDC, if they are then it will be acceptable. We'll have to check on that.
For safety reasons, we want to make sure that competitors know how to drive in the bush. It's a very basic request from the organisers. Most entries in the Paj Challenge are regulars, but if we don't know the entry then we'd like some indication of experience. If you've competed before then that's obviously acceptable, otherwise proof of your driver training is acceptable.
BTW, the Paj Club proficiency course and the VAFWDC training are both held in the Werribee 4wd training ground.
