I thought about this before I decided to reply to it and figured I had a reasonable "forumla" by which I could grade myself........
The "formula" is simple ........ how do I compare with others through a dificult section, whether they preceed me or follow me it makes little differance neither does the vehicle that they are driving as I am simply looking at how I got through compared to them.
I therefore would rate myself as an 8/10 driver. Having said that heres how I approached the question.....
Rig "A" enters the difficult section and cruises through,
Rig "B" enters the difficult section and becomes stuck @ the 3/4 mark
Rig"C" enters the difficult section and makes it 1/4 of the way before backing out and taking the easy part around the obsticle
Rigs "D + E" chicken out and take the easy course around
Rig "F" enters the difficult section and takes a totaly differant line but cruses through, at the other side he gets out n locks IN the hubs !
Rig "H" enters the difficult section and despite several thousand RPMs and mud flying gets stuck on the last climb out !
Rig "I" takes rig "F's" line and drives it without a problem right to the end before becoming stuck in the same spot as rig"H"
Rig"J" couldn't come because of work commitments
Now we have all been at some stage behind the wheel of each of those rigs, now comes the honesty bit, which one are you ?
The above example DID actually happen and I drove rig "I" and NO i'm not patting myself on the back nor am I claiming that the rig was better setup for the example but it came down to the choice of line through the obsticle not so much the rig that drove it.
Its how you approach a section compared to others,
Its how you control the rig while in the section compared to others,
its how you can re asses your drive through it and then re drive it only better the 2nd time around.
75% of the time I take a differant line to others and its probably this one factor that gets me through places that others wont follow or even attempt but thats me and the way I drive.
These days I frighten ppl by not locking in the hubs untill I really NEED TO and it has amazed me as to how may times I do actually get through tough sections, luck may have something to do with it but skill plays a much larger part in it
When I first started wheelin a guy said something that stuck in my head .....
"A pound of momentum equals and inch of traction"
It aint rocket science but its the truth and it works for me.

Well guys I would just like to bring this thread back and see if anyone feels different about their original comments made early this year. As for grimbo, he must feel great as he’s been able to mall his zook once in the last couple of months.
Well I gotta say I think I have improved heaps. I know the car has improved heaps but I wasn’t able to drive it after the modifications. It’s amazing how when you get some time behind the wheel and things just get so much better. It’s nice to say you have a zook on 33’s but if you can’t drive it, it means jack all. It’s been a long road trying to get out of the habit of foot flat to the floor which is the required driving style when you have 29’s. This week alone I have wheeled three nights out of four. I think the hopper has made me a better driver, having such throttle control is amazing. All of a sudden the zook is going places I didn’t think it would, like posing on rocks down on the beach.

I'm still getting used to the Jimny being a little more "tippier" with the bodylift. The rockhopper makes descents a little less scarier.....but I'm used to driving on just a 4" suspension lift and 30's. Will take a while to get used to it

it depends on what sort of 4wds u go out with iv got a 89 vit with 34s cage and lock and main trucks i drive with are torbo patrols with 36s and crousers with v8s but yet sum how the little zook keeps right behind them i go live axle in january wth 5 inch lift and back down to 32 simex centrpeeds 34s are 2 big. and its hard to rate ur self when u will give anything a shot

I would rate my driving ability at about a 3 or 4 as I have not used low range in anger in 5 or 6 months.
I adapt quickly to many driving situations and despite driving many many 1000's of K'ms in my Zuk with dodgy springs no brakes etc I still managed to avoid all the other cars on the road..
I an not panicked by breaking traction at speed etc so fourwheeling has helped in every manner of driving.
It has forced me to be more er "inovative" in diagnosing and repairing vehicle faults (oil was only dirt once upon a time )

im not really sure, granted i havnt really been wheeling for a good 3months now, due to liscence, rebuild of truck etc etc, but back then, i was really happy with where i was, i can honestly say that i have never had to recovered, but i modified my rig at the same rate that i progressed personally, my 3yr old snatch strap only came out of its packaging about a month ago to tow my daihatsu up the drivway
i would really like to perfect my skills, but in all honesty im quite happy with where i am for now, i was lucky my old man tought me well from a young age, to go slow and focus entirely on wheel placement, apart from a big hill climb or ledge etc i hardly EVER go above idle, i think that helped me heaps
but in saying that, i still know i lack in many areas, and which i am really trying to focus on my weaknesses, like i've always hated going down hills, so lately i've been toying with danger and seeing just what they're really like, trying to learn
