Another 22R Problem
Ok I have a problem.
My old 22r has started to loose oil from somewhere near the camshaft and is spraying oil onto the fan which in turn sprays it everywhere inside the engine bay. This is a pain in the ars# as it sometimes make the belts slip and wastes the oil. It is only a fine spray but it starting to get worse. :mad:
it only started happening the other day but i cannot see where it is coming from as it has now covered all the pullies.
Any way any help would be greatly appreciated.
Could anybody with a bundy please tell me what their oil pressure gage reads at 900rpm and 3000rpm in relation to the sections or even take a photo.
I have a feeling the old oil pum may have had da biscuit and may have something to do with it.

Fuk, it seems I cannot go a week without doing an oil seal.
speaking as someone who hsa a 22r and hates it....front crankshaft seal is the usual about $3.50 to replace with a little work but they tend to score the crank when they go so the crank has to be bronze sleeved so it doesnt tear the new seal a new un!
oh yeh...if its like mine, the compression rings go so the crankcase builds up pressure and it becomes a big aerosol can

There is 6 places it could be comming from.
1-The front of the rocker cover.
2-The base of the distributor or even the distributor its self.
3-The front of the headgaskit.
4-The O ring around the back of the oil pump(very common and only available through toyota)
5-The front of the sump.
6-The front crankshaft seal.
If it is either the front crank case seal or the O ring behind the pump make sure you replace both at once as these are both very common oil leak points.
The oilpump O ring does commonly cause a light to heavy spray of oil depending on how bad it is.

If your oil pressure is low then i would say that the O ring would just about deffianatly be the prob.
Its not that hard to replace.
Pull all your belts and remove the Balancer from the crank.
Then there are about 8 10mm bolts around the oil pump.
Remove these bolts and slide the pump off the crank. There is nothing high tech in here so dont wory too much.
Then you want to replace the front seal along with the O ring which is an odd shape.
The seal is available from most auto part stores for around $5-$10 but the O ring is only available from toyota and i think from memory they are around $30. You are best off also buying a Speedy Sleeve for the seal surface on the balancer as it will be worn real bad. These are around $25.
But this is better than the average $1400 exchange for a second hand engine if it drops all oil pressure.

Hey Ruff, i have just taken a real close examination at the bottom of the crank pully (where it meets the block) and there aint any oil dripping from it... Does this rule these seals out or could it still be causeing the spraying effect as it only comes out when it is running?
(My car has never, and is not dripping oil....just spraying it at the moment )

Found the leak, it was coming from the outside oil seal on the oil pump (just behind the camshaft pulley) like we thought.
As i said earlier i couldnt see any oil against the pulley and the block...That was becuase was coming out the inside of the pulley!!!
Tricky little bugger..
Have bought the new seal and will install it tomorrow.

One last question though, what sort of pulling device will I need to pull the pulley off?

If it is the crank seal i would strongly recomend that you replace the O ring while you are there as they are prone to blowing, but its your rig.
You shouldnt need a puller for the pully as they are not taper fit it should basicaly slide straight off. But if it doesnt a couple of large screw drivers behind it usually does the trick.

You are right I should replace the o-ring but I cant afford it... I know it is only like $20-$30 but i dont have that spare at the moment and it would only arrive here on monday as it is not carried in stock. i need the old girl in good working order for this weekend. That is the price you pay for living in tassie I spose...little stock.
So the actual pulley is not on a tapered shaft... I thought it would have been. what holds it on? (as I cant see cos the ratiator shroud is in the way)
