2nd gear problem after engine swap

Post by lde »

Hi there,

Some time ago i did an engine swap into my feroza and i noticed that after that i have a problems with shifting 2nd gear when the engine is cold. Well..i think it is related with the swap i did but i don't remember any problems before swapping. It only occurs when a car is cold, for example in the morning. After 5-10 minutes everything works fine as it's going warmer. I am wondering if:
- it's something with a clutch or sth?
- i thought that it is also time for changing gearbox oil and maybe that is the cause.
- could it be also because i buy a Feroza in August (20+ degrees Celcius outside) and all was fine, then make a swap and now it's a bit cold (~ 0-5 degrees) so the oil has to be get warmer?

What do you think it could be? I also know that previous Feroza owner that i bought this car from filled the gearbox with the 85W-90 oil (mineral) whereas Daihatsu advices 75W-90 which is a syntethic oil. So i wonder if this also can be the reason of my problems.

Do you have any suggestions or are familiar with this problem?
Also an important question: can i change an oil to synthetic 75W-90 now? I've been advised with the Castrol Taf-X oil but i am not sure if i can migrate from mineral to synthetic oil.

Any feedback would be appreciated
Thanks.

I bought mine in December and found once the cold weather hit I was having trouble with second and third gear changes when first starting. You could try something like Castrol VMX80 which is designed for cold shift problems- but I found that only made a small improvement.

I'd recommend trying one of the Redline Oil synthetic fluids. I'm using the Shockproof Lightweight and it's done wonders for it. :D

check clutch adjustment, if its hard to put in gear or wont go in unless you slow down a tad, adjust cable/arm clearance.
