Guys, going to go have a look at a 84 swb mq tommorow. Just wondering if $6500 too much, doesnt matter how good a condition it is...
Has power steering,220000kms, one owner, 5speed, sd33turbo and a little (not unfixable) rust around the roof sill and the bottom drivers side door.
But, im thinking once i start doing a few things too it, suspension, tyres, barwork etc, it will be almost a $10000 vehichle... Was originally thinking id pick one up for $3000...
Dunno, still, if it looks alright to me tomorrow night, ill still get it expertly looked over for things that arnt visible to my eye...

$6500 too much for an MQ
to give u an idea i picked up a stocker swb gq petrol for 5300 with some haggling in sydney..... have spent about 1000 bringing it up to speed... so 6300 total... figuring a few grand on mods and it too will cost me around ten.... in brisbane a similiar vehicle will cost 10000 up..... it has no rust and its in very good overall condition... I'm also trying to sell a mq patrol which is in near roadworthy condition, about 5-600 needed to bring to roadworthy state, with heaps of mods and am geting little response advertising it for 3500 but we'll see what happens

You can pick up GQ shorty's for that price dude. Then you get heaps more grunt, comfort , heaps of spare and modified parts and the best of all? COILS!!!! Iv'e had a Mk shorty with all the stuff youv'e spoke off and it was only $2800. sorry to dissapoint but i reckon too much. if i were to buy for that price i'd expect good condition, rego, roady and mods.
MQ 2inch lift. Enforcer. New springs, shackles, shakle pins and bushes. spring eye bushes, u bolts and shocks. $1300 and it lifted it bugger all.
Descent tyres and rims. $1300.
and its still only a Mq. those leaves springs , not spoa, run at the first sght of rough terrain. Only tellin you cos iv'e done it before. i started with an MK then went GQ shorty and then GQ LWB. and it cost me a bomb. and i did all work myself to.

I wouldnt pay anymore than $5000 for an MQ no matter wat the condition.
The only esception is:
when they are modified, like, V8, spring over, lockers etc.
then they are worth more.

But if ur in the market for a modded one, u can pay up to 10K for an MQ with appropriate mods if thats wat ur after....
other than that, 5000 tops is my opinion.

I reckon sling Kingy a 6 pack and ask nicely for him to check out the V8 one in geelong and maybe go for a drive. As that one sounds pretty sweet and you have a good runner with nothing to do. Would probably cost you $100 in stampduty. So for $2000 you would have a great cheap truck. great for all those muddy tracks down Gippsland.

over here in the states where the MQ was never sold/import which makes it super duper rare.....well, I bought an 83 SWB MQ here with an SD33 for $1500usd. Complete engine rebuild with near $4k in reciepts too!
For the right MQ/MK I think $6500 may be fair. Just depends on what the truck has had done to it. I saw an 80 MQ on the Aussie auto trader once. It had been converted to a Ute (king cab), had a 6.5 GM turbo diesel, cabstar 5spd and tons more shiat. But they wanted $15k.

Im not going to get that Mq now, which actually had square lights, so im guessing was actually an Mk???
Drove not to bad, but the rust was a little worse than i wanted to deal with.
Would still be keen to get one, before i get a GQ, just for a year or two. A good practise 4by, something i dont mind cutting up, and learnin a bit more about the mechanical side of things.
All the cheaper ones do seem to be west of here (melbourne and beyond). At this stage, dont really want to have to travel to get one, but your right, if i havent found one soon, further affield is an option, cuz it will be my daily driver as well (need to stop borrowing the parents car for work)

I paid $4000 for mine, he wanted $6500 but I told him I would do the roadworthy, and he dropped 2.5 grand. it came with a pto winch, (the cable snapped first time I used it) brand new set of muddies, 3/4 full tank of diesel, (140ltr tank), 2" body lift, cd player, snorkel,dual batteries (gel type) battery management system, and an electronic anti-rust thing, that doesnt work. It needs air lockers, could do with another 4" lift, the back taking off, and a roll cage putting round the whole car, that will have to wait till ive got some cash, but im happy with it, and it goes pretty much everywhere, oh its the 5spd turbo diesel. Personally I think i got a bargain.

yea the MQ/MK is a damn good truck. Granted a GQ is better but that doesn't mean an MQ/MK is no good. I think $6k for one is ok if it is the right one. Such as a late model MK Ute with a SD33T, 5spd and H233 full floater. Condition of truck is also a factor on price. I would think GQ's that are cheap because they have been flogged a lot. And in turn an expensive MQ/MK has not been flogged a lot. But of course that is just generalizing....

A little "off topic" maybe but ..............
The reason MQ's are so popular with "newbie" 4x4ers is that they are cheap and its because of that cheap price that ppl arent afraid to experiment with doing their own mods after all who'd throw an angle grinder into the rear 1/4s of a $40,000 "just out of the show room " 4x4????? unless you own a few oilrigs not many would do it hey !!
I often get asked as to why I have so many MQ's, its simple I can cut n shut them which ever way I want and at the most I'll loose a grand or two worth of vehicle but still have the parts anyway !
For what I have spent on 4x4's I'd probably have a brand new patrol sitting in the shed, but would have no inclination to drive it off road, couldnt let a bush put a scratch down the side of my new pride and joy now could I !... But an MQ ...... "lets see what it looks like on its roof" is the attitude I have when I drive it.
The argument about leaf versus coil will never be resolved and in ten years time there will be another suspension system out there for us all to drool over.
In the mean time leafs do work and in some cases better than coils...... lets face it leaf suspension has been around and used for a lot longer than coils, offcourse there's more info on em out there.
V8 conversions are common in MQs and when ya talk to the manafactures about the sales of these adaptors the ratio is about 10 to 3 ...... 10 units to suit the MQ/MK series to 3 units to suit the GQ/GU range ...... 2 years ago it was closer to 12:1.... in 2+ years time they expect the adaptors to suit the GQ range to treble in volume.....
starting to see the circle yet ???
At this moment in time I'd urge anyone thinking of buying their first 4x4 to look seriously at an MQ/MK.... there simply arent the dollars to loose and its one of the best rigs to learn in and about.
Perhaps in 2+ years time I'll point them towards a GQ..... hell I might even buy one by then........
