hey guys,
i have an intermittent issue with the gearbox on my 40 (H55F?) thats fairly predictable and was hoping someone on this board might have some advice/ideas on the cause..
i have this problem of trying to select 1st to take off after taking it out of gear when at traffic lights, intersections, etc. at first i would just hunt for gears until i found something while ensuring i was using the clutch right but this would often take in excess of a minute.
To get it to select 1st i had to put it in reverse (not all the way.. like 1/4-1/2) and then try 1st or 2nd. and this would often be harder than usual to get in. this was repeated whenever i wasnt moving and had it out of gear..
when you try and put it in 1st, you could almost feel a part of the driveline moving forward as well with a subtle clunk.. this usually happens anytime i stop within the first 15mins of driving. Its fine once im going and only really comes back if i have to stop within that period the first time i go for a drive..
i found that when i used to drive to work every day it didnt happen as much.. i had a look at the gearbox, rear shaft and there is a bit of oil leaking noticably at the rear of the gearbox.. its a bit more of a leak than i had previously and i reckon this has probably been going on for about a yr at least (gearbox issue and leak).
i was informed by the PO that the clutch was fresh about a yr prior to my purchase .. and ive had this just over a yr now.. so i was suspecting (hoping) it would be somthing to do with the clutch moreso than the gearbox..
Im hoping that this isnt such a major thing and its not stopping me driving but i would like to be able to fix it if its not major.. or save up for it if it could be in the future..
I recently read in the toyota manual that gear selection can be a bit baukly when cold.. so would these symptons be caused by a cold gearbox or is something more serious to blame?
any feedback is appreciated..

is dbl clutching when you depress the clutch twice before trying to change into gear?? if so then yes.. when it wouldnt go into a gear i did try that but with no luck.... half selecting reverse is really the only surefire way of being able to select a gear.
the last few times its done this i think ive really had to hammer the clutch down, ei ensure i depressed the pedal as far as it went in order to get a smoother (didnt always happen) gear change after half selecting reverse..

It gives the engine and g/box a chance to "equalise" there rpm
Mines a bugger when its cold
but i dont have the "go 1/2 way in reverse" thing, that sound s way worse than mine

1982 BJ42, Turbo, Roberts Air locker, 33" MT-117 xtremes.
It sounds like the clutch to me, mine went a while ago & it had me stuffed for a long time because some times it worked better than other times. When I finally pulled it out I found that one of the cushion springs had ripped out & was laying the gear box side of the driven plate. Because it was moving around it did not always prevent complete disengagement.
coupla things to check anyway...
On the ass of the box is a round metal cover...under it is a nut...if it comes loose, the mainshaft can float abit.....long shot but better than the next thing....the spigot bearing in the back of the crank...if it is dry, u will have a spinning box in neutral with clutch in....to see if it is this....turn off motor and see if selection is easy. in low 1 with clutch depressed, it may even drive on the flat.
If this doesnt help....does the clutch shudder or slip??? oil on clutch can make it stick to flywheel. make sure u have ample oil in transfer as it can get sucked into gearbox. Good fix is the hose between fillers trick...

Use Castrol vmx-m in it...heaps better...or Valvoline transgrid.

Check to oil as if it's too thick it wont select gears till it thins out when it get hot. My 80 is a pig to get 2nd till it warms up and I reckopn its the oil. I will be putting thinner oil into the gearbox next time. (I have been saying that for ages though!!).

Mine wouldnt go into 2nd from 3rd.Used to go round corners in 3rd most of the time.Thought it was syncro. related or something worse.
Lifted floor, put oil into box from gear selector hole *(didnt remove selector, just dust cover) now it goes into all gears better. I guess the selector rails were dry.....Dunno....It worked for me!!
