tyres for 40 series
Im thinking of upgrading from my 235 85 16s on split rims to somethnig slightly bigger. i will need to get some new rims (16x7?) to fit 255 85 16 or 285 75 16. will any of these sizes fit under the 40 series with stock suspension without needing to get the angle grinder out? are there any other sizes that are not too wide and not a lower profile than the 235 85s?

get some 15x8's or 10's.
mate you own a 40, talk in inches!
i run 35's.
but for stock suspension and no grinding, maybe 32's.
if ya on a budget, consider some BFG muddys not the best, but on a budget they go ok and tried and true.
my tip.
oh and 15inch sizes are common as, for rims and tyres!
get some 15x8's or 10's.

choose what size tyres you want to run then make them fit...what will you do in a few months when you think should have gone bigger but didn't cause you didn't want to cut your guards
40s are easy to body lift to fit slightly larger tyres and effective for a small 'adjustment'
while body lifts aren't everyone's cup of tea- it could be a simple solution if your tyre choice interferes - cheaper than new springs and you dont have to cut things and can be done legally
reckon you should build your truck around the purpose you use it for = do you want/need bigger tyres? surely that is more important than cutting your guards or worrying about lift

i dont really want to be lugging round big rubber at this stage. maybe in a few years ill get a set of dedicated rock crawling tyres and rims. i just want something slightly bigger than the 235 85 16s, which are basically skinny 32s.

on a 40 you dont have to raise bumpers / bars etc when you body lift them. on my mates vitara that had to be done. also raises c.o.g. & steering shaft angle things like that that some people cant be bothered with..
cutting guards is an option there is a very tidy yellow swb (Dazz) he has done that both in back and front and not used body lift it looks grrreat
i reckon 15s have good size range but a bit limited 31 33 35 etc and most are 12.5 after you graduate from 31x10.5. a 15" bags more at low pressure
some prefer cheese cutters i think next for me will be 34x10.5 simex
as i want the height not so much the width ( i will have 2" susp and 2"body and bit of minor surgery) to fit them just hope my little diesel can turn them allright

Fj40 '84, 2F. PWS, 2" extended shackles, detroit rear, soon lockrite front. huge 31" tires :( one day some big mothers!
im also on the lookout for some muddies for my 40. ive got 235's on 16's atm with a 2" susp lift and dont expect any changes required to fit the 33's i'm looking at.
From what I have read I think 15x8"s will be alright for 33"11.5 simex's ET/JT2's... now if only i could find some at $180 EACH!?!?!? :shock
personally I would do the biggest I could fit the biggest tyre i could get away with without having to do a bodylift.. any higher c.o.g in a hardtop 40 and even the most modest sideslope would be enough to leave skid marks..

yeh i had bfg muds before and certainly was not impressed with them.
i think ill try to get hold of some 33x10.5 15. this will give me more sidewall, more width (not sure if i need much of this), more height and 15" rims are quite cheap. does anyone know the metric equivalent of these tyres?? then ill just have to work out what to do to make them fit.
oh and what rims would be good, 15x7 or 15x8? do i have to worry about the offset? i know you can get some white ones cheap but they will have to get the matt black treatment. anyone suggest some nice looking rims?

he's only got std. shackels so he probably doesnt get super flex like you

MY45: Thats right, standard shackles, average flex. I was looking into getting 2 inch extended shackles and asked on here about any advantage in flex but didnt really get an answer solid enough to help me make a decision to get them. Can you or DRS shed some light on this?
DRS: Rear guards have not been chopped as far as I can tell, certainly no evidence of it but havent compared to another standard one. I got no scrubbing on the front but a bit on the back interestingly enough. I am yet to figure out how much spring lift its had as I bought it with these springs on. I am looking at doing a body lift though as I dont really want to cut the guards (yeah yeah I know, SOFT ) and a SPOA is out of the question as I am in QLD.
