Hey I have a question about the 2.8L diesel. In canada we don't have diesel toyotas, I imported one from japan - -therefore no one knows a thing about them here.
I am trying to hopefully improve the fuel economy and power of what I have got right now. I would like to see about getting a turbo but not sure what it will do for me. right now I get on average 420-450 km per tank of highway driving at around 110km/h
Just wondering if you guys have some tips (inexpensive preferably.) that could improve things.
Can a person find cheap turbo kits for the 2.8L,
would changing the injectors do anything?
turboing will only improve your fuel economy if you don't take advantage of the extra available power. It does increase the overall efficiency of the engine but it also makes it possible for the engine to burn more fuel per revolution of you choose (with your right foot) to do so!
the best way to get good fuel economy with that motor is with strict maintenance. Oil at every 5000km is an absolute requirement. have the fuel pump correctly calibrated and keep the air filter clean. an injector service will help if the injectors have done over 80,000km as the nozzles start to wear and the cracking pressure and spray pattern go out of specification.
If you are keen on a turbo there are a number of suppliers in Australia who will ship to Canada and/or have a Canadian distributor. AXT and Denco I think will all sell direct to you. Prices start around $A2500 for kits, you would have to add your shipping and taxes/duty etc to that.
the DTLC (Diesel Toyota Land Cruiser) email list I think has a number of people in North America (including Canada) with Diesel Hiluxes, and some vendors and importers who will be happy to give you advice and relieve you of your coin - to subscribe, send an email message with the text "subscribe" to dtlc-request@helios.net

Rene, wherabouts are you? I have an 1985 pickup with a 2L-T (2.4 litre TD) that I am retrofitting a Garret T-25 turbo (from a pontiac sunbird). Also there is an excellentl North American based toyota diesel website called www.toyotadiesel.com

I'm in Calgary Ab Canada. I have heard that you can fit other turbos from other engines, is this fairly simple, and what turbos could you use.

you can fit just about any turbo from a similar sized engine -wastegate makes turbo sizing less critical. you need to manufacture or purchase an exhaust manifold to mount the turbo to, and do some plumbing for oil and water to the turbo, inlet air, and exhaust. if you're doing it all from scratch you need to be a handy welder and have a good supply of pipe joints and elbows. Depending on what your time is worth, it is often cheaper just to buy the kit. Installing a kit turbo takes about 3 - 5 hours, but building the whole thing from scratch takes a full weekend plus teething time.

What sort of stuff would a guy need, I heard injectors are around $40 a piece approx, should a guy just replace them all. I am at 150,000km not sure if there has ever been work done on it since I have only had it for a year.
injectors should be serviced every 100,000km maximum, including replacing the nozzle and valve. servicing the injectors requires specialist tools - besides replacing the nozzle and valve you also need to set the cracking pressure and check the flow rate and spray pattern, which requires shims and/or springs, a pressure test bench, and near cleanroom conditions. If you can get new Denso injectors for $40 each then it would be best to just replace them - typical injector service here is around $60 per injector not including R&R. Alternatively you should be able to buy the nozzles mail order from Australian vendors like SMS Diesel, Don Kyatt, or Geoff Walsh engine parts.

I have a 95 2.8L hilux that i got a turbo fitted to just over a year ago. I was getting about 420ks out of a tank as well, now i can get 500-550 depending on how i drive it. It is certainly a much better vehicle to drive now and an intercooler would be good too (something on my wishlist). One thing i have noticed is that highway driving chews fuel quite a bit (consistent driving at about 3000-3200rpm) ill get about 500 ks off a tank but during the week going to work where im driving consistently in the range from 2000-2800rpm youll get 550 ks easy. Doesnt blow smoke so bad anymore either due to the improved efficiency.
If you have the cash its a worthy investment, i am more inclined to spend the extra money to get pros to install it (got mine done at Berrima Diesel) so maybe search for some diesel mechanics in Canada that can do it for you. But its up to you how much you want to spend. Cost me $3200AUS fully installed with a new Mitsubishi TD-04 Turbo.
If you have the cash its a worthy investment, i am more inclined to spend the extra money to get pros to install it (got mine done at Berrima Diesel) so maybe search for some diesel mechanics in Canada that can do it for you. i have a fatory 2.4 surf manifold and 3.0L turbo on my 2.8.
it all bolts up wen u change the exhaust studs on the block, the best bit is that toyota have allready drilled and tapped the holes u just need 2 remove the studs and put them in the new holes and it will all bolt up
